Well according to the good ole reliable FDA the best way to quit is by using one of the FDA approved quit smoking products such as the gum or the patch but with around a 5% success rate I'm not so sure about that.
I have seen first hand how electronic cigarettes have helped many people kick the habit for good and I believe they can help you quit smoking cigarettes too.
So Why Aren't Electronic Cigarettes FDA Approved?
Excellent question and I'm glad you asked. The short answer is that they have not had a chance to test them, therefor they will not endorse it as such. Right now electronic cigarettes are deemed a nicotine delivery system.
There has been a push and a lot of research has been going into these things and it's generally expected that at some point the FDA is going to have to recognize what most people already have enough common sense to see for their-self.
Electronic cigarettes were designed with the idea of helping people quit smoking, this is why they're available in different levels of nicotine including 0mg. This is also why they look and feel much like a real cigarette. You see the gum and the patch while offering nicotine fail to offer a smoker what they often miss the most, the actual act of puffing on the cigarette and having something to do with your hands.
Electronic cigarettes are the only device that address this issue as well as delivering a dose of nicotine without the harmful carcinogens. It's the carcinogens that hold the cancer causing agents not the nicotine it's self. In other words it's the act of burning a cigarette and all of the chemicals they add to them that causes the cancer.
The nicotine is not exactly healthy but the again neither is soda pop or caffeine but it's not known to cause cancer.
I Invite You To Decide For Yourself.
This article is my personal opinion and the FDA have their opinion which is basically not a decision one way or the other, now I would like to encourage you to decide for yourself if electronic cigarettes could help you quit smoking.
You know yourself better than anyone and only you really know if this is a method you want to use or not. Most of you probably already have your own opinions or maybe have even tried them for yourself, I would love to hear your opinion and or experience with electronic cigarettes.
Please leave me a comment below and let me know what you think of these little gadgets, are the a god send or just another crappy product that promises but doesn't deliver?
I quit smoking 12 years ago, and I did it cold turkey. It was one of the most difficult things I've ever done in my life. Any step that leads to smoking cessation, including the electronic cigarette, is a step in the right direction. IMH (but experienced)O.
I agree with you Bill. Smoking was really hard for me too and now i want to help other people kick the nasty habit. Electronic cigarettes is imo the best way for someone to quit.
In my city they recently passed a smoking ban that bans even E-cigarettes from being used within 20 feet of any business. I don't smoke but I still find this ridiculous since it's only water vapor. If they would remove E-cigs from this ban it could actually help people quit smoking or at the very least make it less damaging to your body.
I still think if someone is really concerned about their health they can use e cigs to quit, quitting smoking takes commitment even if you're using electronic cigarettes you still need a plan for stepping down your nicotine level gradually until you are using none at all. It is a bit more inconvenient for sure but if a person recognizes a need to quit in order to be healthier there is no reason to let the laws that they pass stop you from doing what you need to do.
I have seen many people try to quit using the gum and fail time after time. I think the e-cig is a better way forward as you say having something in your hand is part of the process and required to quit successfully.
I agree with you Mark. Quitting is really hard and people need something that addresses all of the problems that smokers face when trying to quit.
I quit smoking a long time ago, and I was interested in your article because both my husband and my brother-in-law smoking. E-cigarettes were not a tool for quitting smoking when I quit in August 1996.
Thank you for this, it just makes me more confident that these little gadgets could help me stop smoking
I personally believe they can help people stop smoking, in fact I know they can because I know so many people that have successfully stopped smoking because of them. I do hope you will consider trying them and I wish you all the best in quitting smoking one way or another.
I quit smoking 3 years ago I am in it to help other quit now, I have had to deal with bladder cancer which btw the number one cause of bladder cancer is smoking and my experience in dealing with that has led me into it.
Hello Ty, I am not sure how well electronic cigarettes help people quit smoking. I have not noticed a smell from electronic cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes have chemicals in addition to nicotine. I am sure they are less harmful than the average commercial cigarettes (the kind without natural ingredients). The FDA warned about chemicals in e-cigarettes. I agree the FDA has not done a good job of protecting the health of the people in the U.S.A.
The only thing electronic cigarettes have in them other than liquid nicotine is propylene glycol the same thing that they have been adding to fog machines in night clubs for years, is it 100% safe? No of course it's not that's why I encourage people to use it to quit smoking rather than just switching but all natural tobacco is still much more harmful and still has thousands of chemical compounds and is highly toxic. When you burn something it creates carcinogens, carcinogens cause cancer so whether your smoking commercial cigarettes, all natural cigarettes or even Marijuana it's not good for you and you should really not be doing any of it as far as health goes. As for the FDA protecting the health of the American people i would say they have done quite the opposite. It's my firm believe that the pharmaceutical companies have bribed them into allowing and approving many additives that cause health problems and they do this because they make a fortune treating the symptoms of the ailments caused by eating this garbage. Tobacco companies have bribed them into doing the same thing in my opinion. I don't see any other reason why the FDA would allow things that are known for a fact to be harmful and tell people it's safe to eat.
It amazes me how people look to the FDA for advice when it is so obvious that their board members have conflicts of interest with so many of the producers of toxic products including food stuffs. In the case of e-cigs it is the tobacco industry. Is this not some what obvious or is it really not that well known?
I think it's becoming more well known but I think there are still a lot of people that don't know about this yet. I wouldn't trust the FDA to protect my health and I believe that as if my life depended on it.
It does seem someone who is trying to quit would prefer this over the patch or gum. They would still have the comfort of the e-cigarette in the hand. Does the vapor give off any smell?
Electronic cigarettes have no foul odor they have a sweet delightful smell that many refer to as smelling like a really high quality air freshener, well the fruity flavors do anyway the tobacco has very little or no smell but NONE of them smell bad
Huh, I was always worried about the FDA thing, but this does put me at a little more easy with the electronic cigarette phenomenon
That's why I invited people to make up their own minds, personally I don't see how they can possibly be any worse than real cigarettes. I sure wouldn't recommend them for non-smokers but if you already smoke you have nothing to lose and everything to gain
As usual the FDA is light years behind what is happening. I agree that these could certainly help a smoker struggling to quit
Yeah the FDA I just love them, they're supposed to keep food healthy and yet they're the same ones that say it's okay to eat MSG even tho we know for a fact it causes cancer. They also happen to be the ones that told the tobacco companies it's okay to add chemicals to cigarettes which not only make them more addictive but also make them cause yet even more cancer! If we all depended on the FDA to tell us what was healthy we would have the highest obesity and mortality rate in the world...Oh wait a second WE DO!
