In this article i would like to explain to you how to play this interesting game. After you have finished reading i hope you will have a better grasp on how to play the game. If you have played the game before maybe there is something that your not sure about or maybe some rules you forgot. Well all that and much more will be discussed here today,so sit back read and learn.
First off i should tell you what size and basically how a racquetball court looks. Four walls a ceiling and obviously a floor. The floor is like your gym in high school and you should wear non marking shoes when you play. Sometimes the back wall is all made of glass,so people can watch, which makes it fun. The ceiling has lights and there in play so if you hit them you keep playing. All the walls are made of paneling or concrete. The ball comes slower from panel and faster from concrete. The overall dimensions are 20 feet wide,40 feet long and 20 feet high.
Rules sometimes vary depending on where you live but for the most part there basically the same. The server serves the ball from the service box. The ball must then hit the front wall first, then any other wall or ceiling, but it cannot hit the back wall until it has bounced off the floor .The receiver must return the ball before it has bounced on the floor a second time. If he does not hit it before then its a point for the server. The receiver can hit the ball out of the air before it bounces, only if the ball has crossed the encroachment line. This is the dotted line on the court, you cant miss it.
The only way to get a point is on your serve. There are many kinds of serves,i cant go through them all but i can give you enough to get started. Drive serve, this is a serve that you hit really hard and really low so that it just crosses the short line in the service box. The ball must cross this line to be a good serve,if it does not, the server gets a second serve in which he will usually lob the ball to cross the short line. This lob serve is very effective if done properly. Just hit the ball up high with enough pace to bounce just before the short line and bounce high enough so that the receiver has to hit it shoulder high, making sure the ball drops before the back wall. Remember racquetball rules sometimes vary a little.
One more rule i should mention is called a three wall serve. You should not do this. Hitting the front wall first, then a side wall and then another side wall or ceiling before the ball hits the floor. I have explained how to serve a racquetball in enough detail to get you started. You can usually rent a racquet at the gym or they can show you how to buy a racquetball racquet from a rep at the gym.
I hope i have informed you on all the racquetball play you will be doing soon and how to become a great racquetball player like myself. I don't like to brag much but i do really love this game and i hope you do too.
