I want to talk about the technology that's been making waves in the mobile industry recently. It's called Near Field Communication. It's basically a technology in smartphones and similar devices that allows for communication between devices through tapping or bringing into close proximity with each other.
Now one of the things that this technology is being used for is that it allows you to pay for things in stores, like you would normally do using a credit card or debit card. In a world where trying to do things easier is a priority, this is another move that the mobile industry has been currently supporting and working towards. It will allow more convenience for consumers because they don't have to bring their wallets or cards anymore. They just have to bring their phones with them and buy anything through it.
It seems that we are getting into the age where everything is already electronic, including money. Smartphones can now be used as an "electronic wallet" as well.
Now not all people are in favor of this new way of paying for things. There are a number of people who think that it makes them more fearful of losing their phone now because they aren't just losing a phone but money as well. I don't blame people feeling this way, because in the world we live in some people do find new ways to steal money from you even with the honest efforts of people behind this new technology. But I do believe that some proactive measures have to be made in order to avoid people who lose their phones from having their money spent and used.
I even found out one company who's implementing this technology by making cases for the iPhone that has a built-in NFC technology in it. It's called the iCarte cases. All you have to do is attach it to your iPhone through its dock and configure it as a debit card or credit card. You will be able to download apps from banks like Commonwealth and link it to your account.
You have to make sure though that the store you're buying from has a NFC reader like Mastercard Paypass where it allows you to purchase items below $100 just by tapping your phone or card to the reader without having to sign or input your PIN code.
A lot more uses will be made for NFC and it will surely change a lot of ways we do things today. It can even change the way we market products. NFC tags are now being used in posters and business cards where you can simply import the product information to your phone by touching the NFC tag with your phone. And that's just the tip of the iceberg, there will be more ways that this technology will be implemented in the coming years. But "easier" doesn't always mean a "safer" way to do things. Would you use this technology to buy your stuff or would you rather stick to the old ways of paying cash or using your credit card? Let me know what you think.
wow that's amazing - technology never seizes to amaze me!
Ham radio operators have been doing this for years, on the VHF and UHF bands. Think of it like a pair of walkie talkies, and you have the same concept.
It uses the concept of radio, by that i mean - it sends information through wireless means. But it's different to ham radio in the sense that it relays information in short distance by "touching/tapping" your phone to the reader.
Things are really evolving rapidly these days. From offline to online and now we are becoming mobile. Thanks for sharing Jan!
Thanks Cham! Exactly, things are changing so fast these days, it's just crazy! But we do have to adapt to the changes or else we will be left behind when the whole world decides to implement these things.
