Why you need a police scanner
In a world filled with lawyers and corrupt politicians, it is more important than ever to stop relying on our government and emergency services to protect us and start taking responsibility for ourselves. This includes knowing what is happening in a crisis and making good choices to help protect you and your family in an emergency.
I live in a small town in the northwest corner of Washington state near a coast guard base, and just recently we had the Coast guard decide to do some night time training. This involved flying around our small town at low altitudes with spotlights. People were panicking as they saw the invasion of noisy machines flying around shining lights everywhere. I had already heard that their was going to be training with the coast guard involved and so I knew I had no reason to worry, as it was only a military excersize.
You can easily monitor the coast guard transmissions and hear for yourself what is going on, as it happens. When the coast guard is planning any sort of training it is also mentioned over the NOAA channels on a weather radio. Instead of taking responsibility for informing themselves people panicked and were frightened by this activity.
The population of this country just astounds me at times. With all the technology that is available it has never been easier to know what is happening. Something as simple as a police scanner or a weather radio would have informed people of what was happening and there would not have been so much panic. instead the people of this community demanded an apology from the Coast Guard for alarming them with the night time activity. Big storms like Sandy would not have been so devastating had people just taken the time to be prepared, instead deciding to wander around blindly throughout their day without purchasing a simple weather radio or stocking up on supplies like food and other essential items.
You do not have to be a prepper or survivalist to carry the basic essentials and be prepared for a natural or man made disaster. I agree that some individuals do take it way to far but at the same time I have supplies to last at least two weeks stocked up, including batteries flashlights and emergency communications equipment in case of a storm. My emergency hand crank radio includes the adapters needed to recharge batteries and devices in the case of an extended blackout. I also have gasoline stocked up to run a generator to power internet devices, computers and amateur radio equipment so i can stay connected to the world and hear current events. I hope to start putting together a basic solar panel kit as well to provide power and save on gasoline.
The bottom line is that it is my responsibility to provide for my family in case of an emergency whether man made or natural. At the very least get a weather radio or police scanner to stay informed and protect your family.
