Top Ten Reasons Why You Need A Police Scanner

What can I do with a police scanner

As this world of ours becomes more chaotic on a daily basis it is important that we keep up to date on what is happening out there so that we can be prepared for almost any situation, whether it be man made or a natural disaster.

One of the best tools that you can have is a hand held police scanner. whether you are a prepper or just want a way to hear events as they unfold. Not only will this keep you informed of current events but will also warn of any bad storms or other weather conditions that may be headed in your direction.

Most scanners receive in the VHF and UHF frequency ranges. This is usually between 30 Megahertz to 300 Megahertz for VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) from 300 Megahertz to 3000 Megahertz. Most public service agencies use these frequency ranges for communications.

The best way to keep up to date and stay informed is with the use of a police scanner. Not only can you listen in on almost all VHF and UHF communications but you can also monitor the NOAA weather alerts and be informed of any adverse weather conditions that are heading your way. The only communications you can not listen to are cell phone and any services that may use encrypted communications. It is also illegal to pass any information heard on a scanner to third parties when it involves police or fire department.

A hand held scanner can be carried with you as needed when you are on the go and need to hear what is happening. It can also be a great source of entertainment if you are a casual listener only wanting to hear local police and fire department activity. It can be fun to listen in on family activity if you use FRS (Family Radio service) or GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) two way radios.

Are you a big NASCAR fan ? If you plan on going to any of the NASCAR races then you can use your hand held scanner to listen in on your favorite team, or all different race teams as they work their way around the track at high speed. Be the first one to know what is happening as it happens.

If you are a licensed ham radio operator, or interested in becoming one then you can listen in on VHF and UHF repeater activity to see what kind of activity is in your area, or help to become familiar with ham radio protocols and procedures as you study for your license. In the event of an emergency, you can also monitor ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services) to hear local activity in the area and what is being reported.

So, what are the top ten reasons to have a hand held or base police scanner

  • keep up to date on current events
  • Hear live events as they happen
  • listen to NOAA weather reports so you can be prepared
  • Monitor all FRS/GMRS for activity
  • Scan your favorite sets of ham radio repeaters
  • Keep up with relatives activities
  • Hear local police and fire departments
  • Marine activity and Coast guard
  • Hear space shuttle communications
  • Listen in on your favorite NASCAR teams

As you can see there are all sorts of fun things that you can do with a police scanner making it a valuable tool to help you protect your family and a great source of entertainment.

Ya', you're so right Don. My mom well into her 80's absolutely loved having a handheld police scanner. It can be addicting. I've got an aviation back-up handheld radio out in the garage so that I can listen to local general aviation and controllers and that's addicting enough. If I had a police scanner out there too, I would never leave the garage... well, except to refresh the coffee mug!
