What is A Ham Radio Operator

Why Ham radio

As I drive around the small town I live in, I get a lot of strange looks as my vehicle drives down the street. Sometimes I even see people duck and hide from my vehicle when they see me coming thinking that I might be an undercover police officer of some sort. Just because I drive a big 3/4 ton dark blue suburban with 3 antennas on the top and tinted windows. This can sometimes be annoying and other times provide hours of entertainment.

I am what is a called an amateur or ham radio operator. I have a hobby that involves radio and radio communications. Although my particular interests include shortwave listening and working on older tube type transmitters and receivers there is so much more to it than that.

Ham radio operators are involved with emergency communications as well with the ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services) group providing different public service agencies a way to exchange messages during natural disasters. Ham radio operators that are involved with this group can have a station set up in a temporary location in as little as 15 minutes depending on what services are needed needed. They can send messages back and forth between public services agencies as well as hospitals and transportation in various modes including voice and digital .

Ham radio operators are not limited to just one mode of communications either. They can operate voice in AM (amplitude Modulation) FM (Frequency Modulation) and SSB (Single Sideband). A ham radio operator can also provide digital communications computer to computer with a radio or internet link to computers anywhere in the world. One of my favorite modes is Morse code (CW) and I use it almost primarily. Even though CW is an antiquated mode it still gets a signal through when almost every other mode fails. It is still a very active mode on the ham radio bands nonetheless.

Another fun part of the hobby that I enjoy is using older tube type radio gear. I enjoy learning how to work on these types of radio gear with other ham radio operators that also enjoy it. To me there is nothing more exciting than working a DX (Distant) station on the other side of the world with a radio from the 1940's to 1960's. These types of radios are more challenging and take a bit of patience but are very rewarding to use.

So what is a ham radio operator exactly. I would have to say that a ham radio operator is anyone that shares a passion for radio communications and is licensed to do so. If you want to share a fun hobby with people that share similar interests then ham radio may just be the hobby that will allow you to do so whether you are into chasing DX, passing traffic for a traffic net, or just being able to talk to your friends on the VHF/UHF bands.
