Your First Police Scanner

What you need to know about your first police scanner

Police scanners have been popular for many years here in the US, coming and going in popularity.

As the CB (Citizens Band) craze peaked in popularity, more and more homes included not only a CB radio but a police scanner as well.

As CB radio reached it's height, more and more homes also included police scanners. Sale prices have dropped because of this, and now it is easier than ever to pick up a portable police scanner at sale prices.

A police scanner is a broad term that is used to describe a receiver that you can program to listen to VHF and UHF frequencies. There are many models to choose from, some being small and portable and other models made for home use. A police scanner will scan a group of frequencies and when a signal is received it will stop allowing you to hear.

When deciding on which scanner to purchase, it is often necessary to first make a list of specific needs, including size and portability and frequency coverage. Some public service agencies have gone to digital communications. Are you just wanting to monitor local police, or stay up to date on local emergencies as they unfold.

If you want something that can be portable then a hand-held scanner would be more than adequate to provide information.

If you are not a tech savvy type of person you can still pick up a scanner that allows you to just enter your zip code and programs the scanner for you with all your local public service agencies like police and fire department, ambulance services, taxi and bus and other interesting frequencies that are local to your area. Just expect to pay a bit more for this type of police scanner.

Depending on what signals you want to listen to, sometimes an external outdoor antenna may be needed to increase the range that you can receive signals. Line of sight VHF/UHF communications travel in a direct line of sight, usually with a short range of 10 to 20 miles. If you live in the outskirts of your town then you may want to consider an outdoor antenna.

If you live in town then the extending antenna that come with your portable scanner should be more than enough.

One of the fun things to do with a hand-held scanner is to scan groups of frequencies looking for unknown services that may not be listed. Although most cell phones frequencies are now blocked here in the US, you can still find interesting things to listen to. Just be careful of listening to your neighbors, as you may find yourself in trouble for invasion of privacy. Baby monitors can be heard up to a mile away and transmit on frequencies that are covered by a police scanner. Oftentimes you can hear everything that is being said when these are in use.

Another point of interest with police scanners is that relaying the information heard on them can sometimes get you into trouble. It is not illegal to listen, but as soon as you start sharing the information through social networks or streaming the sound online, you may find yourself in trouble with the law. Impeding an ongoing investigation is taken very seriously by the police departments, and you might find yourself with a big fine or doing some jail time depending on the situation.

So, when deciding on what scanner might be right for, be sure to do some research so that you may make the right decision on which model of scanner is right for your particular needs.

Thanks for this article. I had several scanners in my lifetime. My Aunt had one as bedside radio since her husband and son were both police officers working the graveyard shift. My aunt knew all the police radio codes and eventually wound up working for the Sheriff's Department as a dispatcher. Whenever I visited I could hear her sweet southern drawl as she sent codes in the night. LOL Once again Great informative article

The local police dept here can be quite candid at times, especially in high stress type situations. It is always entertaining to listen to the PD chase the relatives around the county on the weekends. Always hear at least one person I know on the weekends. A great source of entertainment.
