Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete is a very useful form of concrete mixture. It is widely used for many applications and is a specialized form of reinforced concrete which can be used for a variety of applications including façade wall panels, fireplace and other structures which need added strength and complexity to sustain their form. This type of concrete has a higher tensile strength and suitable for use with structures that need this quality. Glass fiber reinforced concrete can be identified with a chopped form of fiberglass that is prominent in its mixture. The overall mixture consists of a variety of ingredients including fine sand, cement and other polymer types. This is then supplemented with water and other forms of admixtures and alkali-resistant glass fibers. There is a lot of variety in the mixtures that are commercially available online, but all are similar in their base ingredients and proportions used.
Major advantages of using GRC for construction purposes include:
Structures made with GRC are lighter in weight. The GRC panels are also much lighter in weight and are thinner than traditional panels. However, the relative density of the concrete is similar to Glass reinforced fiber panels.
Unique features that GRC has include highly compressive, flexural and high tensile strength. These effects are created due to the addition of glass fibers. A significant amount of strength is contributed through the addition of fiberglass and the concrete becomes more flexible and resistant to cracking. Further reinforcements can be made using scrim that can increase the strength of objects and reduce the number of visible cracks in structures. Thus, GRC can play a big role in reducing the amount of cracks in a building.
Here are some useful ways to make use of GRC practically in order to achieve desired results. GRC can be utilized in construction projects through many ways. These include:
Casting GRC
Glass reinforced concrete not only has a lot in common with the normal concrete but its functions can be interchanged with the usual combinations of concrete as well. Thus, a common way to utilize GRC is to use it with the casting method. In addition, methods exist that allow the use of GRC.
Spray up
This is a very simple method to apply GRC. You can apply the GRC into many forms through this method. The fluid mixture is sprayed up using a spray gun because it requires spraying the fluid concrete mixture and cutting the fiberglass form a spool at the same time. The method creates a strong GRC, but the equipment to for the purpose can be very costly.
Premix
This method is different in its approach to deploying the mixture. This method includes mixing shorter pieces of the fiber to fluid mixture, which is then put into molds or shaped into different forms with the help of spray guns. The spray guns used with this method don’t need a chopper. However, they can still be very costly. The method is relatively less strong due to the less random placement of fibers, and their shorter length.
This technology has rapidly spread all over the world, and rapidly gaining popularity as complex structures evolve in the construction industry. You can also use GRC in Egypt today.
