Crisp Dinner Roll Recipe

This is one of my favorite bread recipes. It requires starting to prepare the recipe. The rolls will be light and airy but with a crisp, caramelized exterior. Also, they do not require the use of any oil, milk or eggs. Adding any of these ingredients would make the final product heavier and you do not want that for this recipe. It would also increase the cost of the final product.

Get a medium size bowl and put in one and a half cups of hot tap water. Next, put in one teaspoon of yeast and one tablespoon of white sugar. Stir with a fork to dissolve the yeast and allow to sit for about half an hour. During this time, the sugar will feed the yeast and the mixture will start to become bubbly.

Add one cup of unbleached all-purpose flour and dissolve it in the bowl. The mixture should continue to bubble. Add one and a half teaspoons—also known as half of a tablespoon---of salt and make sure that it gets dissolved. Add two and a half more cups of flour.

Eventually, you will want to stir the mixture with your hands and knead it for a few minutes. When you reach this point, I would recommend starting by getting your hands wet. This will help a significant amount since the dough will be particularly sticky, due to the presence of the tablespoon of sugar!

After you have kneaded the dough and washed your hands, it is time to cover the bowl. If it is a bowl that comes with a plastic lid, put it on. Otherwise, plastic wrap or a plastic bag will work well, as long as it is large enough to cover the bowl completely. Allow to sit, undisturbed, for a few hours. Three hours is enough, but you can also let it sit for most of the day.

Take a baking sheet and put parchment paper on top. Put flour on your hands and divide the dough into pieces of fairly even size. Sixteen is a good number, but twelve will also work. To shape the dough, cup the dough in one hand. With the other hand, grab the dough near the top of the roll and pull it down, around the roll, connecting both sides at the bottom. Set the roll on the parchment with the seam on the bottom. Proceed to the next roll ad continue until all have been rolled.

Allow to raise again. After half an hour, preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake the rolls for 25 minutes and check them to see how they look. They will have the most flavor if they are golden but you do not want them to burn! If they are still fairly blond in color, bake for five more minutes and check again. When these are baked, they taste delicious hot. I like to eat some about five or ten minutes after they come out.
