New Beginnings With Cooking

As I begin this journey my thoughts are to give you some cooking tips and advice. As Spring and Summer are fast approaching, fresh fruits and vegetables will be available from our grocery stores and farmers markets. Most of us who are Mothers and homemakers don't always take the time to wash our fruits and vegetables properly. I heard on Dr. Oz show last week to mix one part vinegar and ten parts water to wash our veggies. You can also put the mixture into a spray bottle but be sure to spray them compelety and rinse very well. The vinegar kills the spores and other bacteria that might be on our fruit and vegetables. This saves buying expensive products in the store to do the job. This is something we all need to do to keep our families healthy.

I will be passing along tips you can use in your kitchen, recipes that are tried and true passed down through geneerations. Also information on herbs and spices that can be used in different foods. Now that we are coming into Spring and Summer it is a good time to think about growing some of your own herbs. It is fun and satisfying. One herb I always grow is basil......I love to use it with tomatoes, onions and mozzarella cheese. Chop up your fresh basil and for dressing use balsmic vinegar and olive oil. Great summer salad!

Comfort foods are what most of us love to eat, whether good or bad for us. The gerenation I grew up in didn't think about healthy food and how much fat, salt or sugar went into a recipe. We just ate what our Mothers and Grandmothers fixed for us. Today we are all more health conscious and try to watch what we eat. Sometimes, I think we go overboard. Everything in moderation! Try eating smaller portions and cooking with less fat, sugars and salt. We have more foods available to us now that are 1/3 less fat or fat free that we can use in place of the ones that are so bad for us. Naturally, we are told to exercise but I for one hate to exercise but walking 10,000 steps a day can give you the same effect. I have a web site I have been working on healthygoodcook that has lots of good suggestions on healthy foods we can fix and eat. If you want to control what goes into your mouth, you have to cook at home for yourself. For an example my favorite food is spaghetti and I make my own sauce. I use ground turkey instead of ground beef. You cannot tell the difference and you have saved calories and fat.
