Recipes Perfect for An Enamel Baking Dish

An enamel baking dish is a very versatile piece of cookware. It can come in many different colors, is very color fast and does not scratch off. But its best feature is that it is completely non-stick. This means the most tomato-y, cheese-y and starchy dish will not affect the integrity of this cookware. Don’t believe it? Try these recipes to see for yourself.

Gooey Mac ‘n Cheese

1 box (1 lb) of macaroni pasta

1 ½ cups Shredded Cheddar Cheese

½ cups Monterey Jack, Colby Jack or regular Colby Cheese

¼ cup of flour

½ stick butter

1 cup milk (may not use all)

Bread Crumbs (optional)

Cook the pasta according to box directions so it is al dente (should stick have a bite to it). Melt butter in a medium saucepan. Whisk in butter until paste (roux) forms. Add ½ of the milk and whisk until milk thickens. Add the cheddar and other cheese. Stir until all the cheese is melted. Add more milk if the sauce is too thick (it should be just thick enough to coat the pasta). Pour cheese sauce over the noodles and stir to coat. Pour into a 9x13 inch enamel baking dish. Top with a thin layer of bread crumbs if you wish. Bake for 15 minutes and then serve.

Baked Mostaccioli with Ricotta Cheesy Topper

1 box (1 lb) of Mostaccioli pasta

2 cups of your favorite tomato pasta sauce

1 cup Mozzarella Cheese

½ cup Ricotta Cheese

Cook the pasta according to box directions so it is al dente (should stick have a bite to it). Mix the pasta with the tomato pasta sauce. Pour it into a 9x13 inch enamel baking dish. Top the pasta and sauce mixture with the mozzarella and then crumble the ricotta over it. Cover with tinfoil and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover it and back for another 10-15 minutes (just until cheese topping browns a little).

Did you notice that neither one of these recipes told you to coat the enamel baking dish with cooking spray, butter or margarine? That is because it is non-stick as is, kind of like Teflon. An enamel baking dish may cost a little more than a glass or metal one. To justify the money, just think of all the time you will save not having to scrub the glass or metal ones. Yes, you could line them with tinfoil for easier clean up, but the tinfoil costs money too. Just go out and get an enamel baking dish, try the above recipes or any of your own and reap the benefits for years to come.
