Camping is relatively safe in Hawaii. There are no large, wild animals like mountain lions, bears, or wolves roaming around in the woods.
Two popular campgrounds are Malaekahana and Kahana. Both of these campgrounds are on the North Shore of the island of Oahu.
Malaekahana campgrounds is in between the towns of Kahuku and Laie. It has two large camp area. It's a gated campground that sits on 37 acres of wooded, beachfront land. It has 24 hour security which make it very safe for families. There are 40 campsites on the campgrounds. There are picnic tables, two restroom facilities with indoor showers, outdoor sinks, and payphones.
600 feet offshore is Moku Auia Seabird Sanctuary, or more commonly known as Goat Island. Goat Island is home to 10 species of seabirds. What's interesting about Goat Island is you can either walk or swim across to the island. The channel is shallow for the most part. Even at high tide the water is only about chest high.
There is a calm, shallow cove on the island where you can either snorkel or play in the water. The center part of the island is offlimits to people. The seabirds build their underground nests in this restricted area.
Malaekahana Bay is also home to the Endangered sea turtle, or more commonly known as honu. If you're lucky you might spot turtles close to shore.
Kahana Bay campgrounds is between Kaneohe and Laie. or 26 miles from Honolulu. It has ten campsites within the campground. It has three single outdoor showers. There are two restroom facilities. Each campsite has a picnic table.
What makes this campsite attractive is nearby Kahana Valley with its two hiking trails(one ridge trail and one valley trail). In the valley are log cabins. The valley trail has a waterfall, a picturesque meandering stream, a bamboo forest, and a couple of WWII pillboxes.
On occasion there are base jumpers that take flight off a nearby mountain. Base jumping is the sport using a parachute to jump off fixed objects. The beauty of this sport is seeing all the colorful parachutes. The winds can keep these base jumpers up for long periods of time. Sometimes the base jumpers land on the beach fronting the campgrounds. Sometimes the base jumpers sail over the mountain range and land on the other side of the island.
The bay is relatively calm year round and has a sandy bottom, making it safe for kids to swim in. There are a lot of water activities such as paddle boarding, kayaking, and jet skiing.
Both Malaekahana and Kahana offer a lot to campers.
