Ethics In Camping

A few hours ago as I was doing some writing, a question or two of Trout fishing ethics came up and I started thinking about all the instances in our world of camping where ethics come up and are challenged.

What Do We Have to Draw From?

Obviously everyday now we’re seeing example after example from local governments to the very top of our federal government where ethics are put on the back burner if not totally and absolutely ignored. But yet in many aspects of our lives we are expected to “do as they say, not as they do”. Fortunately for society, many of us were raised in families that were steeped in morals and ethics and as children we were held accountable for our actions. Even now those convictions still ring true in our hearts.

Ethics in Camping

In my world camping is a huge thing and given the amount of time that my wife and I spend camping and fishing in California, there are many times that we are faced with challenges when ethics, or lack of ethics, collide. One such instance is in the area of procuring campsites that are first-come, first-serve. Occasionally you will find some individuals that have some underhanded ways of sneaking in and striking a deal with individuals that are leaving a campsite and you’ve physically been keeping your eye on it and waiting nearby for them to pull out. There are proper ways to do things and there are some totally wrong ways to do things. There are also some ethics that are now being stretched by some of the management companies managing the campgrounds in California. Last year one of the management companies began cutting off water supplies to a certain extent and forced campers to get pretty creative just to make it through the rest of their vacations.

Ethics in Fishing

Trout fishing is an area that is easy to bump up against the limits and regulations imposed by the California Fish and Game. If the fish aren’t biting it’s fairly easy to stay within regulations or if you are simply catching and then releasing. But if you’re in the thick of things and you’re keeping them for dinner, it gets a little tough when you’ve caught that 5’th one and you’re putting it on the stringer; do ya’ turn around and go back to the campsite and clean them and settle for reading a book or do ya’ sneak back down and grab a few more hoping that the Game Warden isn’t hiding in the bushes? With the incredibly stiff penalties that can be imposed upon you, some thought process really needs to occur here.

The Good News

The good news is that in our experiences camping and fishing in California, the huge majority of campers are, for some reason, very high quality individuals and camping around them is a pretty great experience. Sometimes we’ll take off and be gone for several weeks in a row and it’s refreshing to know that almost everyone we meet out there are going to be ethical and moral in terms of camping. If there’s one place that is extremely easy to make some great friends, it’s in the arena of RV’ing and camping. Hopefully the governmental agencies local to your favorite campgrounds will maintain the integrity that they’ve always displayed in the past as you go out there and experience some great camping and fishing in California.

It has been my experience that most people who are out enjoying nature are considerate of others and of the environment. There are obvious exceptions, but for the most part camping is still a great place to meet nice people. Last year, my son and I decided we needed a break and spent the Memorial Day holiday camping at one of our local parks. We rented our campsite close to the lake so we could go fishing at a moment's notice. Keep in mind, my little farm is situated in this same resort area. In fact we were only 15 miles from home. When you have livestock, especially horses, they require attention regularly. So we would wake up, drive home - feed all the animals, then return to camp. In the evening we would repeat the process. Our camp neighbors were wonderful and one night sitting around the camp fire, one of them said, 'Why are you here? You could be more comfortable at home.' To which we both replied, it wouldn't be the same - we were on vacation! It was pretty funny, we didn't even bother to set up the tent. I slept on the picnic table, and my son slept in the bed of the pick up. We are pretty tough guys.

It sounds like even though you guys were only camping 15 miles from home, you two are some pretty hard core campers! You are so right Kali, the vast majority of campers are kind and gracious, the best neighbors a guy could have. Thanks for another great short story... yours are the best!
