Fishing Rods And Poles: Your Basic Gear

Before anyone thinks to ask, the words “rod” and “pole” are fairly interchangeable when talking fishing gear. For some of the purists however the rule is thus: a pole is a pole until you attach a reel then it becomes a rod. Confused? For the benefit of not confusing anybody, let’s focus on rods and reels being the same thing and move on.

Whether this most basic portion of your gear is made of nothing more than bamboo or the top of the line, latest and greatest graphite you must make sure that you choose the right one for you. To find the right pole for your needs you should keep this in mind:

1. Right length/right height. No matter what type of pole that you choose to use, you have to make sure that they are sized correctly for you. If the pole is too short it will hamper your casting ability, too long and you will find it unwieldy and impossible to control.

2. Right amount of action to the pole itself. Some people prefer an ultra light, ultra flexible pole that responds to the slightest movement both from the fish and from the fisherman. Some fishermen prefer a sturdier pole that does not bend quite as much. How much bend your pole will have will depend on the material, the thickness and the type of fish that you are after.

3. Right type of reel. This is one area where you can get into some serious debates. Choosing a reel is a matter of: type of pole, type of fish and personal tastes. Some people prefer an open-faced reel while others may be more happy with a closed face reel that has a thumb button release for smooth casting.

4. Right line. No matter what type of pole or reel you have, they will be of no use to you if you do not have the right type of line to use on them. The wrong line can take a great day and ruin it faster than a sudden thunderstorm so make sure that you use what is recommended for your reel as well as for the fish that you are after.

If you have never fished before, you do not need the best or most expensive pole on the market, and believe me they can become very expensive, very quickly. A simple pole with an easy to use reel is the best bet for a beginner. You can always upgrade as you become more proficient as a fisherman.
