Fishing Safety: The Tips To Keep The Day Pleasant

Fishing for the common man is a relaxing hobby, a gentle sport and a possible way of putting a quick and healthy meal on the table. But, all of the relaxation and the fun of the day may quickly disappear when the basics of fishing safety are not followed for one reason or another. Make sure that you stay safe by following these rules:

1. No secret fishing trips. Even if you want to get away from it all, there should be at least one person who knows the approximate location of where you are going to be as well as the time that you should be expected to be back. Take a cell phone with you in case of an emergency and make sure that you are carrying an id as well. If you have any medical conditions, then carry your medications and medic alert information as well.

2. Wear sunscreen, insect repellent and proper clothing. Nothing can ruin a fishing trip like a bad sunburn, or if you have to fight off the flying, biting insects that are just hanging like clouds at the water’s edge. Proper clothing will include long pants and heavy boots if you will be walking through brush or other rough terrain.

3. Skip the drinking until you are safely at home, or at least back on the shore. The image of the beer-swilling fisherman, sitting in his little boat catching fish and knocking back the brews is a really dangerous concept and can potentially land you a hefty fine or a trip to jail. Drinking will impair your judgment, slow your reflexes and may possibly leave you open to sunburn, heatstroke or worse.

4. All members of your fishing party should have on a life vest or flotation device if they are going to be out on the water. This applies to all members equally, regardless of age and swimming abilities.

5. Use care when handling hooks, lures or other potentially dangerous equipment. This applies to casting as well- make sure that you are under complete control of your line before making your cast, especially if you are fishing with a large group of people.

6. Monitor all children at all times. Taking a child fishing is a very rewarding experience, but you should make sure that the trip is a safe one for everyone.

7. Take an extra vehicle key with you, but attach it to a bobber or hide it in the vehicle itself. Nothing ruins a trip faster than the realization that you cannot go home when the trip is over and done with. (Yet another instance when it is handy to have a cell phone with you.)

Make sure that you practice common sense safety at all times and your outing will be the fun and relaxing time that it is supposed to be.
