Good Sportsmanship is Important

With the fall season quickly approaching, that means that schools are getting back into session, and of course, football season is upon us. Football is easily the most popular sport in the United States. But as with any sport, there can only be one winner and one loser. Every team goes into the game with an equal opportunity to win or lose.

Good sportsmanship is something that is very important to display regardless of whether you win or lose. Let's face it though, losing is not fun. It hurts. It leaves you sad and wishing you had won. Either way, that's no reason to be a sore loser and display a poor attitude towards the other teams fans and players. Everyone knows fully well that only one team will win. If you do end up losing, respect the other team's victory and then move on.

Players and fans have to realize that they represent something much bigger than just themselves. Whether you're a player or supporter of a high school team, or a supporter of a professional team, you represent the team when you step into that stadium. How you act and carry yourself is how the team itself will be judged.

We've all seen players, coaches, and fans lose control on t.v. before, and we've seen how ridiculous and disrespectful they act. Don't be one of those people. It's very important to be classy and not be overly rowdy to the point where other fans are made uncomfortable with your actions. It's just a game, after all.

The players on the field often do talk trash to each other while they are playing. It's a normal part of the game, but it shouldn't be taken too far. You cross the line when you start taunting or showboating, or cussing at the other players.

Players and fans should display good sportsmanship when they win as well. Winning is fun, but don't get carried away and start taunting the other team when you do win. Remember to respect the other team. They worked hard to get ready for the game, and while they didn't win, respect their efforts since they sacrifice a lot in preparation. Let your winning performance speak for you and make sure to tell the other team "good game". After all, both teams and fans share a common bond of loving the same sport. It should be a celebration regardless, since you get to enjoy something you love together!

Cheating is something that should not be tolerated. I consider playing dirty cheating as well. Referees don't always catch everything on the field, but I mean if you have to cheat or play dirty in order to win, is it really worth it? I'd much rather lose a game fair and square than win by cheating.

Lastly, respect the decisions of the referees. They may not be perfect, and at times they may seem to favor one team over another, it happens. However, they have a tough job in managing the game and they do their best to keep everything flowing smoothly. They are an important part of the game and should be treated with respect. They might make bad calls, so be it. Remember that bad calls can also favor your team as well.

Being classy and a good sport may never show up on the stat sheet, but it's the most important part of any sport. It's part of having good character.

I get the most frustrated at children's games where the parents get so upset over what did or didn't happen to or for their child. These people are the worst and set a bad example for the children. Yes, I like to win - but there is always a lesson in losing and I truly believe we learn more from our losses than from our wins. Recently I read an appropriate sentiment: Intelligence is knowing what to say. Wisdom is knowing when to say it.

That quote is very true! And yeah, I see kids getting burned out when they play sports. Their parents push them way too hard in hopes of living out their dreams through them. It's pretty sad.
