Are You Trying to Learn How to Dunk?

Learning how to dunk can seem like an impossible task for young basketball players trying to prove themselves on the court. It seems as though there is no better right of passage into basketball respect than by slamming the ball through hoop with authority. It separates the men from the boys. Those that know how to dunk are part of an elite group of athletes that, well, let's face it, hardly ever sit on the bench. They are the sought after player in pick-up games and the highlighted player in organized games' programs. The good news is that with a little bit guidance, if you can touch the net, then you can easily learn how to dunk.

The Science Behind the Dunk

Knowing how to dunk is basically knowing how to jump. Anyone, I mean anyone (with at least one hand), can put a ball in a hoop, but getting to the 10 foot hoop is the challenge. Increasing your vertical jump is the number one component in being able to dunk. The truth is simple to understand: the higher you get, the easier it is dunk. This means more consistency, more creativity,and, above all, more crowd roars!

Isn't Jumping Higher a God-Given Talent? Not Entirely...

Although some basic jumping abilities are needed to learn how to dunk properly, they are not the only necessity. If you can touch the net, or at least get close, then there is a really good chance that with the proper muscular work-out program, you will be able to dunk with ease. In fact, it may only take a couple of months to increase your vertical jump by 10 inches or more!

What Muscles Do I Need to Work Out?

Most people believe that in order to increase your vertical jump, you have to work out your legs and nothing else. This is a huge misconception. Although leg strength, particularly calf strength, is important, it is only a very small part of the equation. Your core, consisting of your abdominal region, back, and hips area, is the absolute fundamental muscular group to strengthen if you are learning how to dunk. This is the key to turning your body into a human spring. Your legs may wind up the coil, but it is your core that unleashes the power to defy gravity.

How Do I Do the Work-Outs?

It doesn't matter if you have a gym membership or not. If you are in school or college, then you should have access to the weight room if you are an athlete. Either way, if you can do sit-ups, that's a great start. I'm not going to tell you how to do a sit-up, but I will say that the slower and more controlled your sit-ups are, the better. Ideally, you would want to do some back extensions and leg raises/presses to really get the fastest results.
