I never camped until I was 40 years old. It wasn't that I didn't live in a place that wasn't conducive to camping. Heck, I lived in Washington, on the border of Oregon. I lived in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. But you know what they say about never appreciating what is around you. For me, that includes my surroundings, but my ex-husband, my health, you know this tune.

Anyway, I bought a few acres a couple hours east of my hometown, located in eastern Oregon called The Dalles. It's in the scenic Columbia River Gorge, another area that I never took the opportunity to enjoy. The property had an A frame cabin on it that was unfinished. The cabin had walls, a roof and a floor and that was about it. To me, staying in that, was camping. Now let me tell you why. My feeling is this. If you stay somewhere that has no electricity or water, you're camping, right?

On Thanksgiving night I decided I wanted an adventure and decided to go to the cabin. Now I had never stayed there before and figured this would be a piece of cake. I'd bring a small generator full of fuel, some food and I'd be in paradise. Right? Not so much. First of all, it's cold in eastern Oregon in late November. This cabin had window frames, but no windows. I thought the heat from the generator would cover that. Unfortunately, a couple of hours into the night, the fuel ran out. Why didn't they tell me that a full tank of fuel would only last a couple hours. Blankets? Why did I need a bunch of blankets, I had a generator. Well, this cold night became one of the most enlightening nights of my life. Since I was so cold, I couldn't sleep. Therefore, I had this wonderful opportunity to make lists in my head of what I could bring next time to make this "adventure" even better. Bigger generator, more fuel, more blankets, lantern, the list goes on. You learn something from every mistake, right?

Do I still like camping? Well, sure I do - but these days, its inside a motorhome with all the comforts of home. I can't tell you how much I appreciate running water, a shower, a refrigerator, stove, bathroom. I love being able to watch a movie, laying in bed, while parked on the coast with that gorgeous Pacific Ocean in front of me. Remember what I said about not appreciating those things that are always around you. Start appreciating them. It's the little things that count.
