Madden 13 Final Thoughts

Another year, another football season has come and gone. But, I'm not talking about the NFL exactly, I'm talking about EA Sports Madden NFL 13. The newest version of the game, Madden 25 will soon be released, which means that Madden 13 will become obsolete. As Madden 13's shelf life wears down as we approach the upcoming football season, I will provide my final thoughts on this game in which I've spent countless hours on the virtual gridiron.

Gameplay- 8-10

Madden 13 was the first in the Madden series to implement the new "infinite engine", which was marketed as being a physics engine that would be showcasing more realistic collisions. This engine was a mixed bag for me. The running game suffered a bit from this because the running backs would sometimes collide with their own lineman and go flying backwards or be stopped in their tracks. There were also instances were players would trip over their own teammates, which I guess would be considered realistic but I would have liked to have more control and have the jump button work a little better. The throwing mechanics were highly improved, and good quarterbacks were almost too good as they could dominate using the pass lead option. The defense was good except for the major gripe I have with the "ball hawk" feature. It makes interceptions way too easy especially for novice players! I may be in the minority, but I love being rewarded for my skills and timing ability when I pick off Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady. But maybe that's just me.

Presentation-8-10

I was so upset when I found out that Madden took out Gus Johnson in this year's game! I loved that guy's commentary, it would just get me so pumped up, especially when I would break off a long run and he'd yell "he's got get away from the cops speed!" This year they added Jim Nantz and Phil Sims, two solid football announcers but they offer nothing memorable to their commentary. They also get repetitive rather quickly, but I tend to tune them out while I'm playing so it's really not a big deal to me. One new feature that I really liked is that they included some of the real voices of the quarterbacks when they're doing their snap count, such as Aaron Rodgers when he yells out "green 18". I hope they expand on this in next year's game and include more quarterback voices because it was really a neat touch.

Graphics- 9-10

The graphics look better every year. The player models look crisp and clean, the playing surface looks better than ever, and the uniforms look amazing. People who say that the graphics never improve each year are crazy. Take a look at this year's game and compare it to Madden 11, you will see a major difference. The only thing that kept this from getting a perfect score is that they really need to improve the crowd graphics. They are laughably bad. I mean, they look like they were cut out of cardboard!

Online-8.5/10

Online is where I spend the majority of my time in Madden, as do most of the elite players. The online servers are improving little by little, but still not quite where they should be at. I would get disconnected sometimes randomly and end up receiving a loss. Sometimes the connection would be very slow, but I think it's more the fault of the other player's connection. The thing I wish EA Sports would do something about is IP booters. These guys bug me to no end. Basically they disconnect you when they are losing due to a glitch they exploited, and you end up receiving a loss and they get the win. It's such a cheesy move and I don't respect anyone who does it. I hope that EA figures out a way to stop people from doing this, and to punish people who try to do this because it hurts the online component of Madden quite a bit at times. But overall, the online is pretty fun. I've had way more good games than bad ones, and I've played over 500 games online.

Overall-8-10

This year's Madden was a solid sports game. The online part of the game is what kept me coming back for more. There are definitely areas in which Madden can be improved upon to really shine next year. I hope the online portion of it gets a more reliable server especially early on because that's when there will be the biggest number of players online. I definitely enjoyed playing it, and I hope that Madden 25 improves on it in every way. Next year's version will also be on the new next-gen consoles Playstation 4 and Xbox One.They are supposed to be implementing a more polished version of the Infinity engine, so we'll see how all that pans out.

I don`t care much for games these days. They always try and sell you bonuses so that you get features you should have had from the start. As for the glitches, they can fix that with later online patches.

Yeah in the past, game developers used to do so much more with less technology. But Madden is one of the few games I'm really into especially because I play in tournaments both online and in person. The competition gets really fierce but it's fun at the same time. That's really what keeps me coming back every year.
