Mma Strikers Vs Boxers And K1 Kickboxers

UFC commentator Joe Rogan has a great interview on Youtube where he compares strikers in MMA vs strikers in other combat sports such as K1 and boxing. During this interview he states there is a gap between the level of MMA striking and the level of other combat sports. If you watch MMA at all you know this to be true. Main card bouts featuring two top contenders can see striking that can be compared to simplified kickboxing. There are reasons for this gap however and it is not because the fighters are not completley bad strikers, there are other factors involved that I will go over.

1. MMA is not all about Striking.

Mixed Martial Arts is the art of fighting, period. Fights can take place anywhere, not just on your feet, mixed martial artists have more to worry about than K1 kickboxers or boxers. They have to worry about the ground work, the clinch work, submissions and submission defence, all these things are a part of there sport. Therefore a MMA fighters can be successful with limited striking ability, but they would have a world class ground game. This also means they have more material to train with. More aspects of the game mean more techniques to master and this takes time. A world class grappler can't learn to become a good kickboxer in a few months or years. He has to train from the beggning like he is a white belt all over agian. These things take long amounts of time.

2.The Gloves

When you see MMA gloves and boxing gloves right next to each other you would be surprised to see how small the MMA gloves were compared to the latter. Boxing gloves are made to protect the users hands and his opponent also. MMA gloves are too small to protect anything and in my opnion don't really do much to protect the opponent. Because of these smaller gloves it is A LOT easier to knock out another person and because of this awareness that the fight could end at any given time by one punch the fighters head hunt, making the fight look more like a brawl if there standing. That is why the stand up of MMA fighters look so sloppy most of the time, because there going for the head all the time.

Im not saying the sport of Mixed Martial Arts doesn't have great strikers. Look at Anderson Silva, Alistair Overeem, or Edson Barboza. These guys are great strikers and would do well in the kickboxing world, however as a sport including all of its fighters, MMA striking is a level below that of K1 and boxing.

nice article maid.. mma fights are much more difficult than kickboxing or boxing fights.. a mma fight can be over after just two or three punches, but you will newer see a boxing mach or kickboxing mach get ended so "easy and fast".
