NFL Preseason is A Necessary Evil

It's August now, and Fall is just on the horizon. And what's that I smell? Oh, its football! Yes, football is finally back. But it's still not the regular season football we all know and love. Every NFL team must play four preseason games to get ready for the regular season. And let me tell you, these games are not pretty. Every team comes out rusty out of the gate, and the primary focus for the veteran starters is to get a little bit of work in and then get off the field before anyone gets injured.

I've been to the preseason opener for the San Diego Chargers the last couple of years, as well as the regular season home opener. The difference between the two is like night and day, both in terms of crowd noise and the product on the field. And while it's refreshing to finally get a chance to watch the pigskin fly around on the field, I can't help but feel left wanting more from the preseason games. The star players just get to play the first quarter, if that, and then the reins are passed on to rookies and other prospective players fighting to make the team.

Patience has always been the bane of my existence. I want to watch the best play against the best at the highest level already! I used to believe that preseason should be shortened to two games because of how anxious I get to see games that actually count. However, I've come to realize that the amount of preparation necessary for NFL teams to be able to play well during the NFL season all starts during training camp and the preseason. The players and coaches need to work out the kinks of the schemes.

The thing I've learned to enjoy most is to keep an eye on individual players who are new to the team and trying to earn a spot on the roster. You could be watching the next Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers in preseason and not even know it! (They both started as backups). The preseason isn't so much about the final score. It's about getting the roster cut down from about 90 players to the final 53 that are going to hit the gridiron on Sundays. This would be very tough to do if there was a shorter preseason or none at all. I mean, that is a lot of people to evaluate and determine who's good enough to stay and who should be cut. The thing that I've also learned from playing sports myself is that for some reason, there are players who are stars in practice and then they disappear during the games. The same is true vice-versa. As an NFL organization, you always want the best players that actually perform during the games, not guys who are just practice heroes. The foundation for a Super bowl winning team in February is set in July and August.
