Paintball Air Tank Maintenance

Today I will be writing about paintball air tank maintenance. As some of my newer paintball colleagues have asked me if there was anything that one needs to do for the maintenance of paintball air tanks.

There actually is not that much that needs to get done when it comes to maintenance of paintball air tanks. There are a few simple things that you can do, but for the most part, unless you absolutely know what you are doing, you can usually just leave them be.

Air tanks have high pressure gases inside them, whether it is CO2 or HPA, so it would be highly advisable to not tinker too much with them because it can cause injury if handled the wrong way.

Now to cover the basics on what you can do to upkeep your air tanks and hedge your investments – as you know some of these babies can cost a bit. The first thing is to know what type of tank you have. Is it a steel tank or a carbon fiber? The reason for this is that carbon fiber tanks, though very strong, tend to scratch easier, so it would be wise to invest in a tank cover for your carbon fiber system. On the other hand, steel tanks are quite durable so a tank cover would not be necessary. The downside about steel tanks is that they do tend to be a bit bulkier and heavier but are usually cheaper.

Also something else that is a good idea to invest in is a thread protector. The thread protector is just small piece that you screw over the thread of the air tank to protect it from dents and other misfortunes. Because you don’t want to spend another few hundred dollars for your air tank just because you accidentally dropped your tank and dented your thread - thereby ruining it. It can happen and it can suck. Speaking from experience here.

And something else that is very important in your maintenance of your paintball air tanks is to just look at them. Yup, just a visual check is very important. The reason is that by law every paintball air tank that are made has to have a date stamp on it because the tanks have to be hydro tested every 5 years for safety reasons. Otherwise, when you get to the field and you are trying to fill up your tank if your date stamp shows that your tank is out of date the attendant will not fill up your tank no matter what. Rules are rules. So check the date stamp to make sure it is safe to use and, if need be, have it tested than you can go on your merry way to paintball land.

Another thing that you can check at home is the O ring. The O ring is what makes the seal between the tank and the paintball marker. Make sure there are no crack, that it is not dried out or any other visible damage. If there are, make sure to change it.

In the end the main things to remember are that it really is not that complicated to take care of and maintain you paintball air tank.

1. Make sure you tank's date stamp is up to date. If it isn't have it tested and they will add another date stamp of the test date.

2. If you have a fiber tank make sure you have a good tank cover.

3. Check to make sure that there is no damage to the O ring – if there is change it. It's a good idea to have a few spares, it will always come in handy.

Pretty simple and nothing to complicated. Keep up your regular checks and you will be one happy camper!
