Start A Fire Without Matches

Your ability to start a fire without matches is crucial in survival situations. It is a skill that will come in handy when camping, during disasters and if you should be lost in wilderness terrain. Fire keeps you warm, cooks food and sterilizes water for drinking, cooking and washing. It gives you a sense of security and can be used to signal for help—three fires set in a triangle (any three things set in a triangle) is the international cry for help. But what if you don’t have matches?

Although you can start a fire by rubbing two sticks together, as it were, this method is time-consuming and requires technique, so if you really want to become self-sufficient in the wilderness, practice this at home where you have all the advantages and none of the consequences if you fail.

By far the best chance of starting a fire if you are not a skilled survival expert is with flint and steel and it’s modern counterparts. Flint is a naturally occurring stone that yields heavy sparks when struck with a knife or other sharp stones. A flint with saw striker is excellent for generating sparks, and my personal favorite is a modern magnesium block and flint. A knife is used to shave filings off the corner or end of the magnesium block onto tinder. When struck with the flint and knife, these shavings quickly burst into flame, which makes it much easier to ignite dry tinder.

Select an area protected from the wind if you can. If it is really windy you may need to dig down and create a pit, so the sides keep the wind from interfering with the beginning of the fire.

Collect your fire materials first, and separate them around where you are going to build the fire, by size. Place a handful of tinder where you are going to start your fire. Beside that collect and pile about a grocery bag size of kindling 1/4”-2” thick, and about a grocery bag size of fire wood 2”-12” thick

Tinder is your crucial starter. Finely shredded paper or tissue, dry pine needles, bird down, shredded inner cedar bark or birch bark, and dry moss make excellent tinder. Strike your flint and steel so that the tinder catches, then begin to place the thinnest sticks on top. Patience is the key. Piling wood on too fast, even kindling, can smother the tiny flames. Wait until each piece catches fire before adding more. Once the kindling has been added (use a criss-cross fashion to allow air in and around the pieces), you can start adding larger chunks of wood. At this point resist the urge to throw it all on at once—you can still put out a fire if you don’t wait for the pieces to catch. Once the fire is burning merrily, you can relax a little. Other survival techniques can be found at Camping and Hiking Ideas.

Don’t forget to gather more wood!
