The Story Of DJ Fluker From The Chargers

DJ Fluker from the San Diego Chargers was drafted in the first round with the number 11 pick with hopes that he would help fix their woeful offensive line. The first round contract that Fluker signed gave his family the financial stability they've never had. But people don't really know what this young man went through just to get to this point of his young football career.

Fluker was a starting tackle for the 2-time defending champion Alabama Crimson Tide. He is a remarkable talent with incredible size. But the things he had to go through during his childhood and even during college is what really makes Fluker special.

Fluker's neighborhood growing up in New Orleans was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. His family had to sleep in a car for weeks, all five of them. They moved from place to place to try to find a place to stay.

They eventually settled in Alabama, where Fluker enrolled in a local high school.

Fluker's father was abusive, and his mother was a victim of domestic violence. He told his varsity coach that no man had ever hugged him. That would explain why Fluker flinched when his coach first met him and tried to give him a hug.

In high school, he would work odd jobs to try to provide a few dollars for family. He would mow lawns, work little retail jobs here and there, things like that. If he would go out to eat with his team, he would bring a to-go box back for his brothers and sisters.

Fluker would stay at his coaches house from time to time to sleep in their daughter's room who had left for college. At first, Fluker had tears in his eyes when he first stepped into the bedroom. It wasn't because he was sad, but because at the age of 15, he had never slept in a bed by himself before. Something that we consider as basic as having your own bed is something that Fluker had never experienced before.

Fluker's football talents led him to receive a full-ride scholarship to the university of Alabama. However, he had not escaped mother nature's wrath. Fluker was sleeping in his apartment when his teammate, Chance Warmack, woke him up with a phone call and told him to get out of his apartment. There was an tornado coming in to his area and he needed to evacuate. He went to Warmack's place and they took shelter downstairs as an F-4 tornado struck in Alabama.

They went outside after the destruction was over, and they saw incredible damage done by the tornado. Dead bodies were scattered on the floor, buildings destroyed, including the building that Fluker was living at. He went back to his apartment and saw that a Ford Mustang flew into his apartment, which would have killed him had he stayed during the tornado.

Warmack's phone call saved Fluker's life. Had he not picked up the phone, he would not be alive right now to play football for the Chargers. I think the coolest thing is that with his rookie contract, he was finally able to buy his family a home in Mobile, Alabama. They finally have something to call, home. So many of us overlook and take for granted the importance of having somewhere you can call home. That saying, "there's no place like home" comes to mind. Fluker has overcome incredible obstacles to get to where he is at. His story is amazing and I look forward to him representing my favorite football team, the San Diego Chargers!

Go Bolts! And go Fluker!

Ousch. All children should grow up having a good home, food on the table, clothes on their bodys, loving parents and a good education. This story is awful but thankfully it has a good ending.
