Training Like An MMA Fighter, Then And Now

Like the sport or not Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) has some of the most conditioned and fit athletes in the entire world. A quality MMA fighter is both strong and agile, they have to be in order to stuff constant take down attempts and grapple for fifteen minutes with a mere one minute break in between. Recently the appreciation for the sport of MMA and its fighters has risen drastically in the last five years. In particular the UFC has grown where its pay per view numbers rival that of professional wrestling and boxing. Many people are trying to become MMA fighters and train to achieve there level of fitness. And now it a lot easier to accomplish this due to the sports growing popularity.

Due to the growth of the sport in the United States there have been more and more MMA gyms popping up around the country. I have recently seen at least three near me and went to all three, all of were quality gyms with a stable of professional fighters who actually compete. Five years ago it would have been much more difficult to find a gym due to the lack of mainstream attention the sport received back then and therefore the lack of business. However now it is a lot easier to go to an actual gym to train because of the sports popularity spike.

It is also even easier to train because MMA fighters and camps are starting to create training program DVD’s with world class instructors and fighters within your own TV set. An example would be the former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes creating his "Cage Fitness" DVD. It is possible to actually have these now because MMA is getting mainstream attention. If Matt Hughes sold this five or ten years ago there would be no point, no profit. No body knew what the sport was back then and a lot of those who knew saw the sport as a step back words for society.

To conclude the sport of MMA has really grown in the past few years. Training to become an MMA fighter is a lot more accessible now due to this surgence in popularity. I personally have only been a fan for about three years but in that short time I have grown to appreciate the shape these fighters have to be in to do what they do. I have seen that it is not a drunken brawl but rather a display of technique not many of us are accustomed to seeing. Training like a MMA fighter then was much more difficult but now it is much more accessible and appreciated.
