Why Are Athlete\'s Traveling to Germany?

It seems that professional athlete's are traveling all the way to Germany to have medical procedures done. Why are they traveling so far, don't we have the best health care in the world? Is there something wrong with the doctors in the United States that we don't know about? Maybe athlete's have the scoop on something we have no idea about.

In Germany they are doing some medical procedures that are not available in the United States. One of the medical procedures deals with stem cell research and how it can help with injured athlete's. I first heard of this when New York Yankees pitcher Bartolo Colon had the procedure done. Colon is 40 years old and the last three to four years he was not the top rated pitcher he once was. Well, most of it was due to injuries and ageing.

However, Colon had a novel stem remedy to treat his ailing shoulder and elbow. Basically, the stem cells enhance the healing of the ligament and rotator cuff. The procedure increases the healing mechanics much quicker and better than any conventional method. Major League Baseball is investigating the procedure that Colon had performed to make sure that there were no illegal substances used in the procedure. So far it seems like everything was legal and there were no charges filed.

More and more athletes are deciding to have this procedure done. Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers recently had the procedure done on his right knee. He has had some success from the operation as well. Although, the procedure is still in experimental stages, so far the results have been positive. However, Tiger Woods has had the same procedure and his game has not improved. I think that has more to do with the mental part of his game, instead of the physical.

Many athletes have had the stem cell procedure performed and all of them have had good results. The question is why did they have to go to Germany to get it done. The United States does not have the knowledge about this type of stem cell procedure. There is still a lot of controversy in the United States about stem cell medical procedures.

Until we acquire more research on the procedure and begin testing it ourselves. I don't think we will be the leaders in this type of research. Right now, Germany is at the top of its game when it comes to stem cell research. It helps that it is legal to use in Europe and as for the U.S. it is not, but many believe that stem cell research is a good resource to have.
