Many people may be asking are the Ten Commandments still relevant in today’s society or to the average Christian? This short but deep article hopes to answer that for the reader today! I was raised in a house where we kept the commandments of God as we knew how; sure we messed up on a few things but for the most part we did them the best of our abilities. However, how do we know that the Ten Commandments are still relevant today?
This would take a careful study of the bible to get a clear understanding. Many people simply ask the preacher or church leaders, which is based on their doctrine; and they get the answers that the pastor or church leaders believe. But what does the bible actually say about the commandments?
So first let’s get something straight; the commandments of God have been around for ages. In 1st John chapter 3 and verses 4 we are given the official biblical definition of sin. Sin is the breaking (transgression) of the law; so if you sin; you break the law; that means in order to sin there must be a law present. Now we have seen that the Ten Commandments began with Moses and the Israelites from the movie and popular hearsay; but the bible says differently.
In Genesis chapter 26 verses 5; it tells us that Abraham diligently kept God’s commandments. Further, twice did Abraham and his son Isaac pawn their wives off as their sisters and the kings of land charged them for trying to make them commit adultery, which is one of the Ten Commandments. If Abraham diligently kept God’s commandments and these kings (who Abraham and Isaac assumed did not keep God’s commandments) were keeping the commandments obviously this denotes that the commandments were indeed intact, even then.
This makes us scratch our heads because the Ten Commandments then were here before the days of Moses. Let’s go back even further… if sin entered the world through Adam; again this makes us aware of the law being established (Romans 5 v12). To take it beyond the creation of man; Satan sinned also and was thrown out of heaven, taking a crew of sinning demons with him (Ezekiel 28 v15).
All of this shows that the Ten Commandments were here before Jesus showed up on Mt Sinai and gave them to Moses to tell the children of Israel who, as a nation, were to tell the rest of the world of nations. So, are the commandments (Ten) still relevant? They were so important that God came in person to deliver them to the children of Israel. Moses broke them, in a fit of rage, and God forced him to come and get a second copy.
God cursed the children of Israel for breaking His Ten Commandments (Daniel 9 v9-11). The Ten Commandments are the covenant of God; like a marriage covenant between a husband and wife, this is our contract that we want to spiritually marry the Lamb. Entering into the New Testament, Jesus plainly tells His disciples that He did not come to destroy the law or sayings of the prophets; but instead He came to fulfill them (Matthew 5 v17-19). Jesus also told the young man in order to live forever one must keep the Ten Commandments (Matthew 19 v16-19).
Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, teaches that if one does not subject themselves to the Ten Commandments, they actually hate God (Romans 8 v1-8). John tells us that we do not even know God if we do not keep His Ten Commandments; and this is very accurate if you read the bible diligently because God does not recognize those who are not in a covenant with Him (1 John 2 v3-4). All of these are more than enough to show us that the Ten Commandments are still relevant today.
God created them to be kept in order to keep justice, truth, love, and peace on this earth. If we humans gave it try; we’d probably root out 99% of our problems amongst ourselves and more easily bring in world peace without the violent intervention by God Almighty Himself.
Praise the Lord if you have been edified with this study in Jesus name

God never changes and so why would his laws ever become irrelevant? It is a crazy world we live in and the devil twists peoples minds. sad but true.
