Does God Take Our Children To Be With Him In Heaven?

This question haunted me for years as I was growing up. And to understand why, let me first give you a brief overview of my background and the community where I was raised, which will help you to understand the impact this question had on my life back then and into the future.

My Community

Our community was made up of very caring, strong, sociable, supportive and very family oriented people. So when there was a gathering in particular a funeral, everyone would come together as one, to help prepare food and accommodation for the grieving families, relatives and extended family. According to tradition, the deceased would be lying in state for three days in an open casket. This occurred at every funeral back then and still does now.

Haunting Question Unanswered

Reflecting back to the very young age of eight, I can remember attending various funerals. Those deceased were of different ages, from elderly to young children. And it was at the funeral of a 6 year old boy who was also our neighbor, that I heard a minister say, that "God had taken the boy to be with him in heaven." To me, these words weren't comforting, particularly when I saw the absolute devastation of this boy's parents, relatives and school friends. Later I boldly approached the Minister and asked him "Why does god take children away from their mummy's and daddy's? My question fell on deaf ears and I was motioned to move out of the Ministers way, as he collected the donation for delivering his service.

Feeling rejected and unheard and the overwhelming despair and wailing, I scurried to find a wooden platform to sit on! My heart began to race, leaving me panting for breath and gasping for air. And yet my mind was turning over and over with the question "Why does god take our children, to be with him in heaven? Little did I know, how much this question would affect me later down the track.

My Baby Brother

When I was ten, mum was due to have a baby. At that time, the doctors warned dad that there could be complications with the birth. Of course when I found out, I was a blubbering mess! Oh no! The word's of the Minister two years prior, came flooding back. God was going to take our baby to heaven to be with him!

Hours passed which seemed like eternity. Backed up in a wee corner, in an embryo's position, I poured out my heart and soul to God begging him to let baby come home! Dad arrived home much later, to take us up to the hospital where mum was. When she met us in the corridor. I smiled, acting tough on the outside. But my tears ran like a tap that was out of control, which revealed the emotional turmoil that I was experiencing inside!

Cried and Sobbed

Mum and my baby brother came home. As each day passed, my love, adoration and bond grew deeper for my little brother. Many times I would wrap my little arms around him and I would cry my heart out to God thanking him for letting him come home. But the crippling fear of God taking my wee brother to heaven, still dominated my thoughts.

Two years later my nephew was born and Mum and Dad took him under their wing. As excited as I was to have another bundle of joy in the house, the fear of losing my nephew, reared it's ugly head. And yes during quiet times, when the boys were having a nap, I would sit by their cots sobbing, afraid that they could both be taken away to be in heaven with God.

Gods Word

Time and time again, funerals came and funerals went! And each time when it was the death of a young one, the Minister would again say that "God had taken the child to be with him in heaven. When other religious groups visited our community I again found the courage to seek out their Minister to ask, why does god do this? Yet again, I never received an answer until years later.

My brother and nephew advanced into adult hood and it wasn't until I was twenty three, in my continued quest for answers, that I studied Gods Word the Bible and found the answer.

In the Book of Romans 3 verses 23 helps us to see that because of "Sin, we all fall short of Gods glory." So what this means is that, because we have inherited Sin, everyone on this earth including children, die as a result of Sin. Whether this be through sickness, accidents, malnutrition, cot death etc no one is exempt from escaping the inevitable death. This made total sense to me! In fact the day we are born, we are destined to die because of inherited Sin. No one can beat death or cheat death. This is our eventuality!

Conclusion

My experiences growing up and my fear of God taking my little brother and nephew away, to be with him in heaven, as you can imagine, took it's toll on my emotional and physical well being. It's paralyzing affects however never dampened my quest to find the answer to this haunting question. This heavy concreted burden which I carried during my youth, was lifted by the releasing effects of Gods Word the bible.

So does God take our children to be with him in heaven? NO
