Greeting Card Ministry - Simple Encouragement

The Greeting Card Ministry

• What is it?

• Who can do it?

• What are the benefits?

• Do the cards have to be Christian focused?

What is it?

Just a typical trip to the mailbox, or was it? Expecting the usual assortment of bills and advertisements I almost didn’t notice the envelope with the handwritten address. It wasn’t my birthday or any holiday so what could it be? I didn’t recognize the return address either. Was it the newest fad in junk mail? I unlocked the door, threw the rest of the mail on the desk with the rest of the unopened mail and eagerly dug into my mystery mail. AHA! It was a get well card from some of the members of my church. I came over with a warm flush and just felt good. Someone had noticed my absence and actually took the time to write a simple little, “Hope you are feeling well again soon, missed you in church.” It was as if Jesus Himself had given me a hug. There was no way I was going to miss church this Sunday, even if I still felt a little ill.

Who can do it?

This is the church greeting card ministry. It is a person or group of persons who have the gifting of encouragement. For birthdays, holidays, times of illness or suffering, this little group of fellow believers reaches out and lets you know you are loved and missed or being prayed for. It is the simplest of ministries yet it is so powerful. I expect the pastor to visit or call on me because that’s what he’s paid to do. But when an ordinary congregant takes the time to acknowledge me, the church becomes a family. Who else but family and your closest friends send cards? It doesn’t matter how old you are, or how much spare time you have on your hands. Anyone can do it if they are so inclined. It can be the Sunday school class, or the Wednesday night Bible study, or the little old ladies, and imagine the surprise of receiving a card from the men’s ministry! I’ve known church missions committees that also make a point to send cards to the missionaries they support.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of such a simple loving action are immense. Not only does the recipient get the glowing feeling like I did, the person or group sending the card is rewarded with a sense of helping a brother or sister out. When you sit down to write a card you have to put a little thought into the person you are writing too. I think it was Ben Franklin who said that the best way to make a close friend is to help them. Of course the church benefits too. Like I did when I opened my card, I felt like a part of the family, not just people who smiled at me and greeted me in church, but I realized that my church family thought of me even when it wasn’t Sunday. I belonged. I had to be there the next Sunday to thank the senders and to make a point of connecting with them. That simple card, now displayed prominently on my desk at work became a sort of advertisement for my church family. People are curious and when they see a card on your desk they naturally pick it up or they ask if it was your birthday or something. This is a perfect introduction to telling someone about what a loving church you belong too.

Do the cards have to be Christian focused?

There is something about Jesus and the Bible that is inherently soothing. This is why I would suggest cards that have a Christian theme. They are relevant to a person’s situation and card writers have a knack for just the right passage. A Christian card also adds to the receiver’s imagination the warmth and comfort found in attending their church even when they can’t be there.

IMHO

Dayspring Cards is one company I recommend. They are a division of Hallmark, so you know you are getting quality and they have such great specials. If your church has a website for its ministries or supports missions you can also become a Dayspring affiliate and raise a little extra support too.

Street Talk

John, I am a United Methodist Pastor and I loved your article. You are dead on with your comments. This is one of the most meaningful ministries in a church. It is best from the "ordinary congregant" but it doesn't hurt for the pastor to send a card either. I believe I have improved relationships and strengthened the bond the congregant has with the church by remembering a birthday, anniversary of a member. You are certainly correct aboutt this ministry making the church seem more like family. Great article
