Was Jesus Resurrected Part 2

This article is a follow up to my previous article that I wrote on the same topic. I wanted to keep it brief to began to engage you with this question. In this second part of the question was Jesus resurrected I want to talk to you essentially about three things: Alternative explanations for the empty tomb, the reality of the empty tomb and the resurrection of Jesus as the best explanation for the empty tomb.

Alternative explanations for the empty tomb.

Tied to question, was Jesus resurrected is the idea of an empty tomb in the first century. Almost all historians believe that Jesus existed and was crucified and was buried. People don't normally raise from the dead and the implications of this are huge so therefore many have not accepted the reality of the resurrection of Jesus as a historical fact. The empty tomb is accepted by many who look at the historical evidence in a critical, serious manner. It is very hard to deny that there was an empty tomb after Jesus died and was buried there.

There are those who accept an empty tomb but not the resurrection of Jesus. However, throughout history there have been numerous attempts to explain why there was an empty tomb where Jesus was buried. For example, one theory stated that in reality the disciples went to the wrong tomb, another rather recent theory stated that Jesus was buried in a shallow grave and eaten by wild dogs (no evidence for this though). These have all been rejected. The fact is that there hasn't been a serious sustained explanation to the empty tomb apart from the explanation that Jesus did in fact raise from the dead.

The Reality of the Empty Tomb

To respond positively to the question was Jesus resurrected we have to affirm that the tomb where Jesus was buried was found empty. Here are some facts that affirm the empty tomb:

- Jews, followers of Jesus and Romans alike knew where Jesus was buried. The religious jewish leadership at the time wanted to make sure the disciples would not still the body so they talked to the Roman leadership (Pilate) to make sure that the tomb would have soldiers to protect this from happening. They knew exactly where Jesus was buried. Women that had believed in Jesus saw where He was buried. There was no doubt to the location of the tomb where Jesus was buried.

-If there was no empty tomb you could not proclaim the resurrection of Jesus. The New Testament is full of proclamations of a Jesus who rose from the dead. If there was no empty tomb all the religious leaders who were opposed to this proclamation had to do is show that the tomb was not empty and stop Christianity from spreading. If people were wondering, 'was jesus resurrected' they could have an answer to this by showing that the tomb was not empty. This did not happen and Christianity spread.

-There is no record of a place where people venerated Jesus' burial place. This has no explanation unless the tomb was empty.

The Resurrection of Jesus is the best explanation for the Empty Tomb

Was Jesus resurrected? Paul writes a letter to the church of Corinth and in chapter fifteen he talks about more than five hundred people who claimed to have seen Jesus after he died. And what is interesting is that he says that most of them are alive. In other words, you can go talk to these eyewitnesses and reach your own conclusions.

The appearances of Jesus that the New Testament speaks of that happen after the death and burial of Jesus are evidence that the reality of the resurrection of Jesus is in fact the best explanation for why there was an empty tomb.

Was Jesus resurrected? More than five hundred eye witnesses believed so in the first century. But not only is this a great piece of historical evidence, how do you explain the origin of the Christian church? One scholar said that the birth and rapid growth of the church remains a mystery to all who refuse to accept the only explanation offered by the church itself.

Was Jesus resurrected? What do you think? If He did, what are the implications? Perhaps the Jesus of the New Testament really is God and desires a relationship with all who receive Him.

I like your presentation of the information. I have always said that if you make people think and present facts and information that they may not have previously known then it will bring them closer to if not over the brink to believing. Every author that can cause an audience to think about and maybe even research a little on his or her own has planted a seed or watered a seedling. Keep writing.

Nice article! With Easter right around the corner I think I will write an article on the integrity of Gods Word on this subject as well in the sense that people should understand just when Jesus arose from His tomb... And why when we celebrate good Friday and then Easter Sunday is actually wrong when rightly dividing the Word for this is not three days and three nights in accordance with Roman law.. More to come on that a bit later lol but nice article again, it got me inspired to write about this too so thanks!
