What Does The Bible Say About Cremation?
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

When we die it is thought that the body returns to the ground and the soul goes up to heaven to be with the Lord. So with the body, it really does not matter much what happens to it during death because it is the soul that counts. In Genesis chapter two, it reads God formed man of the dust of the ground and man became a living soul. God did not put the soul inside of the man, but rather made the soul a living soul as opposed to a lifeless soul. This point is made to correct separating the body and soul when they are in essence the same thing. When one dies, they return to being a lifeless soul and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

What does this have to do with the question, what does the bible say about cremation? We get a better understanding of cremation if we have a clear comprehension of death. If you are under the belief that you will be reunited with your body in heaven, then you may have a distinction on cremation because if this body is cremated how will you reunite with your new tabernacle in heaven? On the subject, the bible does not give a clear rule concerning cremation. God is always clear on what He does not permit and what He does. If we do not get a strict, “thou shall not,” or we observe examples of it being condemned in the bible, we probably can rest assured that it may not be done.

In the scriptures there are men who burned people, burned bones, but I have not read where it was ceremonially done where ones bones were cremated into ashes (for the purpose done today). Death in the bible is viewed as a sleep, primarily if you die in Christ. Many of the Israelites and the fathers (Abraham, Isaac) took much effort to buy burial grounds to make sure their bones were laid to rest properly.

Joseph, son of Jacob, made sure that the children of Israel did not leave his bones in Egypt when it was time to depart Egypt. When Joseph’s father Israel died, they took him and buried him in the land next to his wife Leah. The burial was important, to go and rest and lay with the fathers. It appears to be a matter of respect and honor. To get a proper burial is perceived as the honorable thing to have and cremation perception is a death without honor. All of the respected kings of Israel received proper burials.

What does the bible say about cremation? Nothing. Should you partake in it? It is totally up to you and your family. The law does not speak against it. The main event we should be concerned with is getting our spiritual bodies, which is qualified to inherit the kingdom of God. The flesh profits nothing, it is Words of God that are life and they are spirit.
