How Do You Repair A Concrete Wall That Is Only 3 Inches Thick

On a project that I was the OPM on a few years ago there was a problem with water leaking into the basement of the building from outside. The contractor could not come up with a proper solution so he asked my help. I just came back from my Cerlon training with a contractor from the area.

We called the Cerlon Company to tell them what the problem was and their scientists gave us a formula to use to repair the wall. It was two feet high and there was wood sheathing and studs that were on the wall 3 inches back from the face of the concrete wall. This area was below grade. We had the area dug out so that we could put a form in to hold the Cerlon. We found some rotted wood that had to be repaired before we could pour the Cerlon.

The forms were made out of ¼” melamine paneling this time with 2x4s horizontally every foot that meant one on the top one half way and one on the bottom of the form. We used 2x4s stakes every 4 feet with braces to the ground to hold that form in place. There is little pressure when you use Cerlon because it hardens so fast.

We used a 1 bag barrel mixer with a plastic drum to mix the Cerlon. The plastic Drum is needed because otherwise the Cerlon will stick to a metal drum. The design mix called for ¾ stone to be mixed with the Cerlon at a 2 to one ratio to get 9000 PSI.

4 men excavated by hand, formed, poured and stripped 40 feet of wall 2 feet high in 6 hours. We did not even have to pour through lunch we just stopped eat our lunch and started pouring again as Cerlon will not have any cold joint in it. We did put some 6x6 6/6 wire in the pour about an inch from the outside face of the wall.

The wall came out smooth and straight with Cerlon, We stripped the wall within an hour of pouring with Cerlon. There were no Cold Joints even though we stopped to go to lunch. The Cerlon adhered to the wood backer and chemically attached to the concrete and reinforcing wire we used.

If we used concrete first of all you could not get concrete to stay and not crack with being only 3 inches thick and you would have had to brace it more than with Cerlon using concrete. The concrete does not chemically adhere to itself you need to use a bonding agent. So in closing I would like to say that Cerlon was the best choice to repair this wall with. I checked it a few weeks ago when I went to see my client and the wall still is in good shape with not cracks. There is not water leakage in the cellar either.
