Testing Ceramic Products For Precast Structures

A bulletin came out from Cerlon ceramic products that an Engineering School in the Southeast has been testing ceramic products to be used in Precast structures.

They formed a double tee such as the types that are used on parking decks. The Tee was at least 8 feet long but in may have been up to 12 feet. They constructed it the same way that the tees are constructed when you use concrete for a filler. The only difference is the panels that were used had to have a plastic coating as the Cerlon does not stick to plastic.

Rebar was installed in the tees along with wire mesh. I believe the Scientist said that a volumetric mixer was used to batch the concrete and pour the tee. As you may recall from some of my other articles on this subject a volumetric mixer is usually mounted on a truck and has the stone, sand, water and Cerlon ceramic product in separate bins and comes together at the mixing auger, which by the way is a special auger designed especially for mixing Cerlon, but is also a superior mixing auger for concrete.

At this time I would like to take a few to explain the importance of the water ratio to material mix. The water has to be measured very accurately in order to get the Strength of the Cerlon too little and it will act like dirt and too much you will not get the proper strength you are looking for. Heat is another factor in the setting of Cerlon, the colder it is the more open time you will have to finish Cerlon, in some cases Ice is introduced in the water in warm climates to retard the hardening of the Cerlon

About half way through the pour of the Tee they ran out of stone, so more had to be brought in to finish the project. There was not a worry about cold joints as Cerlon will chemically adhere to itself, the steel re-bars, sand and stone that is in the mix.

They decided to have lunch while the pea stone was delivered. They had at least an hour between the time they ran out of stone and the time they started pouring again. Seeing the Cerlon was hard within about 15 minutes and very hot the Scientist figured this would be a good test for the adhesion of Cerlon on itself and all the materials in the Tee.

They finished the pour and cleaned up the equipment which is another very important procedure as within 10 minutes there Cerlon ceramic projects that is wet will harden in the equipment thus making it useless for the next pour. By the time all the equipment was cleaned the Cerlon ceramic product was hard.

They built the tee so they could test its strength. The engineering college where the testing was done has one of the biggest breaks in the country. The Cerlon panel did not snap until the pressure was well over 9000 pounds PSI. The tee snapped like someone cut it with a saw the stones, rebar and wire did not crumble like in a concrete break it sheared off clean.

The beauty of ceramic products for precast is they can be poured outside in winter no heat needed. You can get over 9000 PSI with ceramic products. Ceramic products sets in a short time and it adheres to itself and many other products.
