Car Solutions-Fix The Smoking, Clunking, Sputtering And Dying
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Some car problems are obvious. You are out of gas: get more gas and you are back on the road. You have a flat tire, you fix the flat or replace the tire and zoom, down the road you go. Some car problems are not so obvious.

You are driving down the road and suddenly a big gray plume of smoke rises from the hood and then what are you supposed to do? For the more serious car problems and solutions, a little bit of calm, level headed-ness is in order. It is always best to have a general plan in mind when you are driving, especially in certain situations. At the very least, it is best to know how to get the help that you need if your car breaks down, so a cell phone is always one of the best tools to have in your emergency kit.

Not all car problems and solutions are obvious right away. Sometimes the car starts acting funny or making new sounds and you do not necessarily know why. If the car is making a strange sound but is still in motion, continue driving to the nearest safe place. The only exception to that is if there is visible smoke coming from the car or there are warning lights on the dashboard. At this point, continuing to drive will cause further damage to the car and may cause any repairs that would have been possible, less likely.

If you do pull over, make sure that you are as far off the road as possible and then turn on your flashing hazard lights. If you have flares or other markers in your car, use them to alert others to your car before it is too late. Call a friend or family member and then try to see about getting a tow truck to your location. If it is late at night, stay inside of the car with the doors locked. Do not open the door or roll down the windows for anyone that you do not know unless they have a uniform and an identification tag. Even then, do so with caution.

Some car problems and solutions are not caused by the car itself but rather by the weather. If you are driving and the roads become too hazard to continue driving on, it may become necessary to pull over or to seek shelter. Remember in this case it is your own personal safety that is more important than that of your car. If you are stuck in your car for any length of time, you will need to make sure that you are staying warm without increasing your risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. If you are running the motor for extra heat, only do so briefly for every hour and make sure that your tail pipe is not blocked by the snow.

It the car problem you are dealing with is rising water, do not remain in the car, seek higher ground as quickly as possible.
