Choosing The Best Air Compressor for Automotive Repair

When you set out to start researching what is the best air compressor for automotive repair, there are a few factors you must take into consideration before making your final purchasing decision.

What type of user are you? Are you a busy automotive shop owner? Are you a professional DIY person operating out of your home? or are you just someone who enjoys occasionally tinkering around in your garage doing your own automotive maintenance.

For the serious automotive repair shop owner one of the first things you need to take into consideration is how many tools or pieces of equipment will the air compressor be operating simultaneously at the same time, an compressor must meet or exceed the PSI requirement of your most demanding air tool and/or pneumatic equipment which the compressor will feed, when ever you purchase a piece of pneumatically operated piece of equipment the psi operating specs are typically printed on the packaging or stamped on the the actual device.

When you have figured out your psi requirements you can then use the CFM rating of a given brand air compressor, CFM is the amount of compressed air volume available to operate pneumatic devices, to determine which type of air compressor you will require either single stage (125-135 PSI) or a two-stage (175 PSI) compressor, be sure to make sure this is the number you are using when determining the size of air compressor you will need.

Typically if you are going to be using your air compressor in an automotive repair shop environment it would be wise to choose "at a minimum" a two stage 60 gallon air compressor or larger.

For the professional DIY person who intends to use their air compressor for home use, a single stage 3 or 5 hp belt driven 60 gallon air compressor should be sufficient for just about any automotive repair task you will be performing.

Keep in mind that air compressors that are 60 gallon or larger require an electrical power supply of at least a 220volt power supply, if you are not sure what your electrical requirements are be sure to have a qualified electrician review your requirements prior to buying your air compressor.

For the occasional tinkerer who enjoys doing there own automotive repair a 3-6 CFM 110v 30 gallon portable air compressor is ideal and is the best air compressor for automotive repair, this type of air compressor comes either as a direct drive or belt driven compressor, it is recommended that you use a belt driven air compressor, they operate much quieter than the direct drive.

Buying an air compressor can be a pretty expensive investment and with so many brands and types on the market determining which brand and type is the best product to serve your needs requires a little bit of research, sized incorrectly or with insufficient options to meet the needs of your specific application and you will know it almost immediately.
