Do I Really Need To Change The Oil In My Car?

Believe it or not, people really do wonder if they really do need to change the oil in their car. You must change the oil in your car periodically to keep it running its best and to keep it even running period. How often you should change your oil will depend upon the type of car you have, your driving habits and where you live at.Changing your oil periodically is going to help with any Waterloo auto repair needs in the future.

If you have dirty oil, it is not going to do as good of a job as fresh and clean oil is going to do. The additives in your oil boil out when it becomes dirty and contaminants will form in the crankcase. The dirty oil can eat at metal partsand water is going to collect over a period of time. Dirty oil will wear away at parts of your car's engine, when in reality the oil's real purpose is there to protect it not to damage it.

When Should I Change My Car's Oil?

Your car's oil should be changed at regular intervals but what regular intervals mean will depend upon many different factors. Within a couple of days of having your oil changed, it is going to look black again. You cannot look at your oil and decide if it is time to change it. It is important to keep a record of when you changed your oil last. When you frequently change your oil, you will get twice the mileage out of it.

Extreme Operating Conditions

Extreme operating conditions may include:

If you do a lot city driving or rush-hour traffic driving

If you make a lot of short trips daily

If you do not get up to high speeds on the highway

If you drive in very hot weather

If you drive in areas with a lot of blowing dust

If you tow/haul heavy loads frequently

In all of these circumstances, you should change the car's oil every 1,000 to 3,000 miles on older vehicles. On newer vehicles, you should follow the manufacturers' recommendations for extreme use, which is going to be close to every 3,000 miles for most vehicles.

Normal Operating Conditions

Many car manufacturers say that you should change your car's oil every 7,500 miles but it depends on your driving conditions. New vehicles are going to be able to run longer on the same oil than older vehicles. Improvements in motor oil have also extended the amount of time you can wait to change your oil. To be on the safe side, it is always best to change your car's oil every 5,000 miles. You should not wait more than 6 months to have the oil changed, no matter what mileage you have driven. You should never go longer than what is recommended by your car's manufacturer. If you ever have questions about when to change your oil, you can always contact your Waterloo auto repair center, such as DM Service Centre.
