How to Change A Battery In Your Car

This is a topic that can be easy to talk about or depending on the model of your vehicle, a real challenge.

If all batteries were in the same place and all things were equal, how to change the battery in your car would be a cake walk, but that simply is not the case.

Why is placement of the battery different from vehicle to vehicle

Depending on the design, some vehicles simply ran out of room to put the battery in the conventional place under the hood.

While it would be nice to be able to walk you through this step by step there are too many different placements of batteries to do this. Some are in the trunk, some under the back seat, get my point? It would take forever to cover all the possibilities.

Why the article then?

I can still help you with some valuable information.

First, most places that sell batteries will install them for little or no charge, and this is always good as it takes the risk of not properly installing the battery and causing damage off your shoulders and puts the liability on the installer.

I highly recommend the first thing you do is get the charging system tested to make sure it is indeed the battery that failed and not the system.

If the system passes go ahead and have a new battery installed.

You will have to reset the radio settings and any other electric toys you may have. It is wise before the installation to unhook and GPS devices as they could be damaged with the disruption of current.

What to look for out of the installation.

Make sure the installer inspects and cleans the battery cable ends. If they are corroded or in bad shape have them replaced. They are not too expensive and can make a huge difference in battery life.

I always ask them to make sure they put anti corrosion jell on the terminals and ends before they tighten them up.This will keep them from getting full of that fluffy white stuff .

I have seen batteries installed with the bolts that hold them in place not tightened up properly. Make sure this does not happen, as serious damage can happen to the battery.

And away you go!

Some final tips to keep in mind. Many new cars warn against jumping off the battery with jumper cables as this can damage the charging system. Also, some vehicles have a certain install procedure required when installing the battery.

It is always wise to read your owners manual and be familiar with your ride.

Happy driving!

I was recently warned not to try to start a newish car with jump leads - how things change! They were essential kit to carry around at one time.

Only if you do not follow your owners manual can it be harmful.

Hi Shawn, my friend insists on topping the water in my battery to the top (you'll have to excuse him, he's french) but I've always been told you should just cover the elements and no more. Another friend says that you have to have the right percentage of acid? I've siphoned the extra water out to the correct level now as the battery wasn't charging properly. Thanks.

Always fill the level to the bottom of the fill hole, using distilled water. By siphoning out some of the water you may have removed some of the acid too. OOPS!

Great tips, Shawn. After a car accident, our battery never fully held a charge (and it was replaced after the wreck). After two trips to the collision shop, we took it to our own repairman and the collision shop hadn't properly installed it! What a joke :(

Battery went dead in the Acura this winter, and radio was disconnected. Now Acura wants $100 just to pull the radio out to get the serial number. LOL! Wish I knew how to do it.
