How to Change A Tire

You walk out of the store, arms full, and as you are walking up to get into your car you see one of your tires is flat.. Oops, you remember that triple A bill you forgot to pay, and realize you are going to be changing this yourself.

Well, I will do my best to walk you through the process of how to change a tire.

Where do I start?

Put your purchaces away, and open the trunk and locate the spare tire, jack and tire wrench. Make sure your spare has air in it. Putting on a flat spare really will not help.

Most vehicles the spare tire will be in the trunk , but some vehicles, pickups and vans for instance, may have them under the rear of the car, hanging by a cable. On these models the jack is usually under the hood with directions on how to get the spare tire out from under the vehicle. By now you are thinking, man I should have paid that triple A bill.

Hopefully your vehicle is on a flat surface. If not, look around and see if one is close by. You may carefully and slowly move your vehicle to a safe place to change the tire. We do not want the car to fall off the jack due to an unlevel surface.

What next?

Place the jack under the car in the appropriate spot. Where is that you ask? Good question! If you have an owners manual in the car you can look up the jack points there. If you do not check where you found the jack. Many vehicles have instructions for jack use on a sticker in the trunk.

Crank the jack till it is just snug against the vehicle jack point and grab your tire iron.

Remove any wheel cover there night be on the wheel, or any lug nut covers, and loosen all the lug nuts. Remember, left for loosen, right for tighten.

Once you get them loose, then go ahead and jack the vehicle up till the tire clears the ground and remove all the lug nuts.

The tire will now come off.

We are halfway there!

Set the old tire aside and grab your spare and slide it over the lugs and go ahead and install all the lug nuts.

Take your tire wrench and just snug up every nut in a cross pattern.

Lower the vehicle down from the jack and set the jack aside.

Take your tire wrench and tighten all the lug nuts as tight as you can get them in a cross pattern.

We are almost done!

Most vehicles today have what is called a temporary spare, and you will want to get to a service station as soon as possible to either repair or replace the original tire you changed.

Go ahead and put the tire, jack, wrench and wheel cover in the trunk, and head to a repair station of your choice.

Congratulations! You now know how to change a tire!

Haha... I can just see me now. I just call AAA. Happy to have a detailed, step by step plan for changing a tire. I've always been concerned that I won't tighten the lug nuts enough, and the tire will fall off. Irrational maybe. Just have to do it once for confidence.

Thanks for this helpful article Shawn. My dad made sure we all knew how to change a tire. The problem is lack of strength for a lot of us ladies... even jumping on the jack! When those nuts are tightened by machine in a shop I think I'd likely just have to flag a passing knight in shining armour!

Some great tips there Shawn. Had to do this myself a few weeks back in remotest Scotland and was unwilling to pay the cost of replacement locally. Save £100 by using our tyre service here at home. You can get 67.9 MPG out of a VW Golf Diesel driving 360 miles on a space saver/temporary tyre. :-) (UK spelling throughout)
