How to Detail A Car?

You go to jump in your car, the sun is shining but your car is not. You realize it has been a long winter and your car still has signs of Christmas and New years all over the carpet and trunk area. Oh, and there is whats left of that bag of popcorn you spilled. At this point you can leave it as it is, or you can find out how to detail a car.

Can I do this myself?

That depends on how much ambition you have. Considering what the going rate for having a car detailed today I choose to do this myself. The savings come in handy and there is a certain pride you feel when the job is finished.

What will I need?

There are quite a few things you need to do the job properly. You can cut corners here depending on how far you want to go. I will list the things needed to detail a car completely.

  • Running water and a hose
  • Bucket and sponge
  • Drying rags or towels
  • Roll of paper towel
  • Bottle of window cleaner
  • Bottle of car wash soap ( Do not use dish detergent )
  • Bottle of Armor All or equivalent.
  • Bottle of car wax
  • Air freshener
  • Bottle of carpet cleaner
  • Vacuum cleaner/ Preferably a shop vac

Where do I start?

I usually star by vacuming the car. Start with the carpet, seats and trunk area. Take your carpet cleaner and scrub all the floor mats if applicable, and scrub the cars carpet, then move to the trunk area..You can let the cleaner dry while you are washing the car, as you will vacuum the carpet cleaning residue up after it dries.

Go ahead and wash the car. remember to open the doors and wash and rinse the door jams.

Wipe the entire car down, including the door jams.

I then move back to the carpet, and re vacuum everything.

Next comes the dash and surrounding area. I use Armor All on all surfaces but the windows. There are several brands available for this step. You can use a q tip on the hard to reach areas.

Now I move to the exterior. It is time to apply the wax. there are many different kinds of car wax. When you go to the store make sure you find the one that suits your needs and follow the instructions on the label.

The last thing I do are the windows and tires. I use the window cleaner on the windows and the Armor All on the tires. When doing the tires you may have to putt the vehicle forward a bit to make sure you cover all of the tire sidewalls.

When washing the windows be sure to roll them down about an inch so to wash the edge of the window. Now put in the new air freshener and stand back and admire your work

You have now successfully detailed your car. I will cover detailing under the hood in a future article.

Feel free to share this article and leave any questions or comments below.

Happy driving!

I have borrowed a friends car and it is now in desperate need of a clean I have been debating whether to do it myself or get someone to do it for me. Might opt to try and do it myself. You make a good point about washing and rinsing the door jams. Thanks Gai
