How to Pick Out A Set Of Tires for Your Car

It is time for a new set of tires. With so many makes and styles to choose from, how can one know what is best for their car? I hope this article on how to pick out a set of tires helps you out. If you are buying a quality set of new tires, it is a fairly large investment, and worth some care in considering which tires to go with.

Is there a difference in tires?

Different manufacturers have different grades of tires.

Depending on where you live, what your driving style is and how much you want to spend will determine what kind of tires you need.

I suggest finding a trusted mechanic to help you pick out what you need. Cooperatives are great places for tire purchases, as they tend to cater to tire sales.

Some of the many choices are:

  • All Season radials
  • Summer tires
  • Snow tires
  • Agressive tread
  • All terrain tires.

There are also load ranges to be considered. If you have a pickup truck and are going to be hauling things, you will want a higher grade tire than if you have a small compact car. Hauling a trailer may require better grade tires also.

Is it better to stick with the major tire manufacturers?

Most of the time yes. Surprisingly many of the off brands you may find are made by the major tire companies. You may want to shop around for the best deals.Prices for the same tires vary from shop to shop. many may be willing to give you free mounting and balancing when you purchase a set from them. Also, check into any local warranties they may offer, like free rotation, or puncture guard.

Some tips to remember when buying tires.

Always have your alignment, shocks and or struts, ball joints, and tie rod ends checked at the time of installation.A miss aligned car can void the warranty on new tires, and bad struts or shocks are dangerous, and will cause premature tire wear.

Always make sure to buy the proper size tires, tread style and load grade for your driving requirements. The wrong tire for the job can be dangerous. Nobody likes a blowout at highway speeds.Improper sized tires also can void your vehicles warranty.

Regular tire inflation checks will assure you of optimum fuel mileage. An under inflated tire will cost you fuel mileage, and prematurely wear out the tire, as will an over inflated tire.

Make sure to have the valve stems changed at the time of new tire installation.

Tire requirements for your vehicle can be found in your owners manual.

You are now armed with some information that should be helpful on your adventure. Happy driving!

Excellent advice. I bought a set of tires from a coop many years ago and saved some money. My last set of new Michelin snows I bought from Tire Rack. I received a $70 AMEX debit card for doing so. The driver's tire reviews are especially helpful at tire rack. Your tip on checking out the vehicle's suspension before mounting the new tires is a good one.
