These days, the speed of advancing technology is great, especially IT(information technology). One of the great product in this technology is Smartphone. Now smartphone can do a lot of things, browsing web, email, game, map, navigation, and so on. And good news for auto mechanics, do-it-yourself-er, or car enthusiasts, smartphone can be used as OBD2 scanner.
To use your smartphone as a scanner, all you need is a device that connects between your smartphone and a car. There are two types, one is bluetooth built-in so you can use with PC, too. The other one is a device with USB cable, well this works for only PC.
This can scan a computer of you car, see DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code), clear the code, IM reading, Live Data. If you need an additional information of DTC, you can search on line just one click away! And showing Live Data is not only in numbers, but also in a graph and a dial. With engine size input, it shows even fuel economy, too. And you can arrange the display as you like. That is a beautiful thing!! You don't need to go to AutoZone to have your car's computer scanned. They only give you the code's number and description. You need to look up for the detail yourself anyway if you fix your car for yourself.
You'll need to install software to work with, but don't worry, it doesn't cost much. And those software has usually demo version. You can try them before buying. The most popular app for android is "Torque". This demo version, "Torque (free)" has enough features. If your cellphone is android, try this first.
The price varies from brand to brand, as well as from retailer to retailer. But not more than a hundred dollars. If you purchase a conventional scanner for the same price, probably you only get a small code reader that has tiny display showing code's number.
Back then, 90's 00's if you want an additional meter, such as coolant temp, oil pressure, boost meter and so on, you need to buy each by each. And It costs more than a hundreds of dollars. Now you can get all of them together, less than a hundred of dollar, no installation fee or time (well, only for software, a few bucks and a few seconds). It is easy to get all information of your car. It is easy to make your look sporty and stylish. It is easy to impress your girlfriend. All you need is smartphone or PC, software and OBD2 adapter.
We should appreciate for the technology and take advantage of it!!
