Make More Tips! Be A Bartender, Not Just A Beer - puller

One of my pet peeves is to see a "so called bartender" mix a cocktail or pop a top on a beer, serve the beverage, collect the money, just say "thank you" then walk away. If they are busy that is one thing. If they walk away and start watching television, talking or texting on the phone or sitting down and talking to a non-paying friend, that's another story. In other words, they neglect the customer, then complain they don't make enough tips! I do not refer to these individuals as bartenders, I "tag" them as "clock-watchers" and "beer-pullers".

I can help you if you look at this another way. You have served the customer the drink, collected payment and said "thank you". That is how the bar makes some of it's revenue and pays you a base wage. Now's the time you really "kick into gear" being a professional bartender and not just a "beer-puller". This is where you will start making the biggest part of your pay. The tip jar.

I don't know if you realize every bar, lounge, pub and tavern have an "alarm system" that goes off and alerts the bar owner, manager and even some of the customers when a bartender is not doing their job correctly! This alarm sounds something like this. "Can I get another drink down here, please?" or " I hate to bother you but can I get some service"? The owner will look at you, the manager may look your way and it will draw some of the customer's attention when they hear the "No Service Alarm" go off.

If you're truly busy, just acknowledge the customer in your own words that you will be right with them. Everyone will understand. If they look up and see you just watching television, talking on a personal phone call, or just standing ignoring customers, you have not only lost potential tip money, but if you don't correct this bad habit you will lose customers that could be your future "regulars" and believe it or not that's the big money.

You can be a great bartender. Remember the big money is not how you mix a drink although it is an important part of the professional bartender's duties. Your big money will be from the tips. Treat a customer how you would like to be treated. Show the customer you truly do care about them.

In this present business world you see many people that deal with the public that just don't seem to care about their customers. Whether it's a grocery clerk, gas station attendent, department store clerks or basically many people who deal with the public including so called bartenders. It just seems many of them just seem not to care about the other person. You have a golden opportunity to not only make good money but as you will find out, you'll be a "breath of fresh air" for the customer if you just care about them for a short time and they will return.

Check out the articles here in the future and I'll continue giving you some great bartender secrets that will build your personal customer list and creating friends and fuller tip jars for you.
