Retirement – A Time Of Change And Economising

In the recent past there have been many books, articles, films and speakers, elaborating on the demise of the world, due to climatic changes. “Global warming” scream the head lines, announcing the release of a book or other upcoming event. Conferences, allowing Presidential candidates, Prime Minister's, and other political campaigners with differing in opinions, to raise the matter. Scientist expanding the findings of research. Is it a concern of a retired couple? No!

If the age of retirement has now been met, the concerns of sea levels rising by 350 mm in the following century, or the temperature to increase by 1 degree, has little or no bearing on the retired. Hell, he or she won't live that long, their concerns are far closer to the pocket. One degree higher in temperature, the old girl felt more than that whilst experiencing menopause, the old man the same, he should have received the accolades of remaining with her. Sea level rising, no problem, they only stand knee-deep when at the coast, no more surf boarding, wave riding or the likes.

The concerns, have they sufficient monetary reserves to live their lives to the fullest, or will the present financial woes of the world, force them to a level of poverty unexpected. The old man worried his weekly game of golf be reduced to monthly, his daily beer to weekly and his chocolate bar a thing of the past. The old girl worried her visit to the hair stylist once a week, her teas with companions and her shopping sprees, out the window. Hair stylist, once a month, her own styling difficult because of arthritis. Tea and shopping reduced to the observing of those better off enjoying the cakes beyond her pocket, shopping now only via a window.

Something has to give, they must economise, but how? Two aged people, used to a certain way of life must change. “When you boil the kettle for tea, make sure there is only enough to fill two cups.” the old man will pronounce as words of wisdom, “That will save a fortune in electricity!” he will exclaim. In the past this never entered his mind as a waste of power. “When you shower, woman, like we did in the army, shower on; wet, shower off; soap, wash, shower on; rinse and shower off. This will save a fortune in utility bills!” “No more full baths of water, lying around like the opulent Cleopatra!”

The old girl will endure the articulations of her husband, her memory bank far more advanced than his. “Well my husband dearest, (always more loving than the old man) when you shave in the morning, and I insist you continue with this practice. Do not let the water run in the basin continuously. Wet, tap off, lather, shave, tap on, rinse and tap off. Your shaving, allowing water to run continuously, probably uses as much as my bath!” The old man never considered this, and to ensure he's not out done, announces in a loud voice “Don't use the toilet so much!”

The procedure repeated for switching off lights when not in the room, TV's off, not left to discourse the empty room the latest news. Wash days reduced, clothes re-worn if not dirty, drip dried no tumble drier use. “If it ain't crinkled woman, don't iron it!” Geyser temperatures reduced, gardens watered less, lawns mown when slightly over grown, and any other saving possible within the household to reduce the bills.

What are they actually doing? Helping to lessen the demand on the environment, less water, less power, the very epitomisation of what we all should do. This old couple, with no concern for the woes of global warning or the effects of climatic change, only concerned with matters of their enjoyment, an example to the whole world.

I have often pondered the point, if all the cities and towns in the world, were to extinguish every second street light, and every office block unattended, were to extinguish their lights, how would this affect global warming? Fossil fuel usage must reduce, demands for power less, resulting in a massive preservation of the environment. Or is this the pondering of an idle mind?

Street Talk

I did get a chuckle reading your parody. How true though. In Brisbane we have become water misers after the drought and very real water concerns we experienced in recent years. Level 6 restrictions (they invented a new level) and letters in the mail if we overused our allotted quota. Last year the flood nearly drowned us all and still I save the water from my kitchen sink in a watering can as a precious commodity we pay for. Just a couple of nights ago I turned off the tap my husband was busy brushing his teeth under and he understood! I hate raising my kids with a lack mentality over the biggest most important resource in life but unless it's hitting our back pocket people just don't care!

How true, I spent years when money was no object, not giving these points any thought, now with shortages and escalating cost, one tends to economise, it is only then that one realises what you wasted in the past.

Rob, I love your suggestion of reducing the number of street lights and turning off light in buildings. It truly is a waste of electricity. In our area, municipalities have installed solar panels on light posts, which reduces the use of electricity to light the streets by a ton. We need more ideas like this!

Thanks AJ, to see the wastage, I cannot believe no one else has thought of it.
