OK so England bombed in the World Cup which given all the pre tournament hype was a surprise. They were also acting like footballers in their down time which was a surprise! ....or not
What was a surprise that they were unaware that any indiscretions would not be noticed. Wake up boys! the average Joe public with a phone cam and the prospect of getting paid for the pictures would jump at the chance of taking a snap.
Oh! and the CC TV cameras everywhere. Most sane people know that public areas are covered with CC TV cameras and night clubs where bad behaviour is expected will more than likely have cameras.
In the UK (the worlds most cc TV'd country) where most of the team live. Unfortunately for Mike he is now GBP25k down having been fined for his behaviour.
The best example of drink driven antics was the "swimming" incident. Its quite sensible to dive from the stern of a reversing ferry as it approaches the dock. I am sure it looked as inviting as a cool bubble bath but most of us would resist the urge to have our legs cut off if we got it wrong.
The RFU selection of the national side has proved to be a challenge as have , many of its own senior managers.
England should now move on.
Lets wake up boys and stop acting like the footballers we have come to dislike. The England rugby team are generally better educated than footballers so they should know better. Show a good example to the young grass roots players who aspire to play like you.
Every weekend thousands of children turn out to play Rugby and the vast majority are well behaved and are in it for the sport. Parents would not want their children to associate with a sport that does not clamp down on the players at the top of the game. It is clear that since significant amounts of money are now being paid to players for endorsements and playing that the emphasis has changed.
So in conclusion it was not a great world cup for a number of reasons. Some were avoidable and some were not. The team needs to be more carefully advised when they represent a nation on the world stage. There are many good players across the country who would jump at the chance of representing their country. Lets show the grass roots players that players can have some self control and take resonsibilities for their actions.
The players need to be supported and be taught how to relax tapping into their innerenergy and cope with the stress of top level performance. The the players at west avenue support local rugby teams and believe the Samual Beckett philosophy of try again, fail again.....fail better.
