The End Game
As the top rugby club championship moves towards the end the race for the top is getting very exciting.
The top four clubs will play off to determine the overall winner.
The Latest Results
Before this week-end Northampton were top leading Saracens by 2 points. But yesterday found Sale who had a very poor start to the season beating Northampton.
Then Saracens beat Harlequins and gained a bonus point in the process. This match was played at Wembley in front of a record 83,000 crowd for a club game. That does show how rugby union has progressed in the professional arena. At the very best in yesterday’s football(soccer) matches would not even have got half that many spectators.
Harlequins rested their England players for that match which may have contributed to their loss.
Bath are now also knocking at the door with a resounding win against London Irish. Leicester who are currently fourth play Exeter later today.
Sale and Harlequins are also in with a shout.
What about the Rest?
At the other end of the table Worcester are really struggling without a win so far this season. Yesterday they led London Wasps for all the game up until the last minute when Wasps scored a try which was converted for a 2 point win.
Newcastle Falcons newly promoted this season are finding it hard going but look likely to stay for next season and hopefully climb further up the table.
Gloucester have also struggled this season but had a rousing win against Newcastle yesterday and will probably end up in the middle of the table.
Exeter who are Leicester’s opponents later today are greatly improved side with some very convincing wins this season. Today’s match has the potential of being very exciting. Both sides play a points scoring game. Leicester will no doubt field a side full of current or ex international players.
Who Will Win?
So with five more rounds of the championship to go there is plenty of scope for movement up an down the table. Also with the six nations championship now complete clubs will have the opportunity to field all their top players.
For my money I think Saracens and Northampton will certainly make the top four. If Leicester win today then I think they will too. As for the fourth club then I think it will be between Harlequins, Bath and Sale and it would appear that Bath have now got their act together and might just make it.
