Beginner Marathon Training What to Do When You Decide to Compete for the First Time?

It doesn’t matter if you have been running for a while or if you are a complete rookie, I bet you are a bit curious about what it would be to run a marathon. The first thing to know is that not everybody has what it takes to take part of such event. It takes a lot of courage and determination before, while and after; and you have to be well prepared to avoid an injury.

The next list numbers some topics you need to take into consideration when deciding to train for a marathon.

1. Have a written plan

This is the starting point. You must not start training until you have a perfectly detailed plan of action. There is a massive number of sites where you can get a decent marathon training plan. Some of them are free, some aren’t. I suggest you to check as many as you can, and decide the one that is best for you.

Once you have your plan, put it somewhere visible and don’t miss any session. If you do, your body will take longer to get used to the intensity of the exercise. Commit with yourself and your reward will be great at the end of the road.

2. Never push your limits without proper supervision

If you are a rookie runner, I suggest you consider two or three weeks before your training starts to get used to exercising. If you jump directly into any routine, there is a good chance that you will not be able to reach the goals set at the beginning and that the journey becomes unpleasant.

Remember to start your routine with a good warm up and finish stretching for 10 to 20 minutes. Monitor if your body is adapting to the training: some plans might not be for you, even when personalized. If you have to make adjustments or if you simply feel uncomfortable with the routine, you are free to make as many changes as you want to get the desired results.

3. Eat healthy and get rest

No good training is complete without the corresponding changes in diet and rest habits. If you are not ready to sacrifice your high fat or carb diet, your results won’t be as good as you expect. Sometimes this is the hardest part because we usually have bad habits, we are used to eat a lot of fast or junk food and we don’t give our body the proper amount of nutrients it needs.

Resting is also essential because the body is designed to recover at night. If we sleep less than six hours, our daily performance will be diminished, affecting not only your training routine but your daily activities. If you have some sleep disorder that won’t let you have a full night’s rest, you should visit a doctor and ask for his/her advice.

Finally you have to remember that you are about to start a hard but rewarding progress, and it is very possible that you will want to quit somewhere down the road, especially if you feel that your marathon training plan is not what you expected. Don’t give up!!! Look straight ahead, visualize your goal and go for it!!
