Born To Run - A Book Not Just About Running

I finally got to reading, what I now consider one of the greatest books of all time, Christopher McDougall's 'Born To Run'. I have taken up running 18 months ago in order to get extra energy in my daily life. At that time, I picked up Stu Mittleman's 'Slow Burn', which was a perfect book to start with. But now, having clocked well over a thousand miles, I was ready to learn more. For me, running is not just about running, hence I say, 'If you think running is about running, you have not been running'. There is more to it. It's a passion, a lifestyle, an appreciation of life, and as McDougall discovers, it is something we were born to do.

Christopher McDougall set off on a journey to find out if running was what humans were designed to do. And guess what? We are the best suited species to do so. We are better than cheetahs, horses, antelopes, tigers, lions, the whole lot. Sure, they can beat us on a short run, but on a long endurance run, they don't stand a chance. That is, they don't stand a chance against humans who still run. For the majority of today's society, that does not hold true. But there are still those who run, and run far. What keeps them running such long distances? The sheer joy and pleasure of the act itself. Long distance running allows the runner to marvel in the beauties our earth has got to offer. During these runs you have time to reflect, learn about yourself and tap into extraordinary sources of energy.

The author travelled to the Copper Canyons of Mexico, where the Tarahumara people live. For centuries, the Tarahumara have been running distances which make the ultra-runners look like amateurs. Men, women and kids all partake in the activity. They have run to survive and for pleasure. They are much healthier and happier than the average inhabitant of the western world. But it is not only the Tarahumara whom McDougall focuses on in the book. He introduces the reader to great athletes of past and present who excel at distance running. They all share the passion and understanding of the purpose humans have in life. We were born to run. And all these great runners share one thing. It's love. Not the love for running, but love for the next human being and the love for our planet. 'Born To Run' by Christopher McDougall is not just about running, it's about love!
