Interesting Hobby

Today I was attending a lecture on Icelandic grammar at the University of Akureyri. The teacher was talking about something he obviously found very interesting and he had no difficulty keeping our attention because he was so excited about this himself. Then, suddenly one of the students asked if the teacher never got bored with grammar. We all laughed and someone added: "In other words, do people ever find you boring?"

Sometimes I am afraid that people get bored with me constantly talking about running. Then I take a little break from it and remind myself that I do have other interests. I sing in a choir, I love music and I really like my work as a psychologist. In fact all kinds of things interest me and I like to think that I can keep a conversation going on different subjects.

Once I was travelling with my mother when she said: "I wonder if you can talk about something without connecting it to running in some way or another". I'd been telling one running story after another about every subject she brought into our conversation. I don't blame my mother for getting a bit tired of her daughter rambling on and on about running. She isn't all that much into running herself and I sometimes think she blames running for the fact that one of her sons, my brother, fell down in an epileptic seizure during a 10k race. He had brain tumour without knowing it and the first sign of his disease was this attack. He'd been running for a few years then with no difficulties at all. My mother knows that running doesn't cause cancer, but her feelings are a bit mixed anyway. And no one blames her for that.

Well... I don't want to be like those obsessed people who go on and on talking about only one subject and can't talk about anything else. But then... If you want to become an expert in your field you have to use a lot of time and energy on it. If the field is narrow you might be a little lonely there if no one else shares your interests.

I am trying to write in a way the ordinary every day person can relate to. Not only runners. Which means I would be happy if the readers would give some feedback on what they like to read about. Then I might try to write about things my audience wants to read about.

Street Talk

It's easy to get a bit one tracked when you have something you're passionate about. However the 30 in 30 really does make you feel like you're obsessing - and I'm not that far into it yet!

From my experience people are almost never boring when they are talking about something they are passionate about. It is the same with your writing about running, imho.

Yes, when you put it that way, you're right :)

I think we all have our own interests and things we value highly in life. It's impossible not to be passionate about these things when the topic comes up. My challenge is not so much talking about things I love but rather listening enough to what others have to say. That's the true skill of a good conversationist!
