More About Goals

What, how and when

What do you want, how are you going to get it and when are you going to get it.

It isn't enough to say you want some... you have to say how much you want. If you want to lose weight you have to say how much weight you want to lose. Which means you have to know how much you weight now and you have to decide what your target weight is. If you want to run fast, you have to decide how fast you are going to run.

The next step is to decide how you are going to do this, how you are going to lose weight, how you are going to get more speed to your running, or in other words: which way you are going to choose on to get to your target.

The third step is deciding when exactly you are going to reach your target.

And when this day arrives it is clever to have some reward ready if you were successful at reaching your goal and even decide some punishment if you don't reach your target by your deadline.

Start instead of stop

It is easier and more fun to start something and do something, than to quit something or not do something. "Don't do that!" isn't a good thing to say to a child, the child likes it better when it gets attention for something he or she did than for something he/she didn't. It is hard to aways have to stop and not do things. It can feel as if you aren't allowed to do anything, at least anything fun or worth doing it. It works better to say to a child what he can do instead. "Go out and play" instead of "stop playing computer all day long".

It is a useful approach to do more of the things that work, which means you have less time to do things that don't work. A kid who is busy doing thing he is supposed to do, is less likely to do things he isn't supposed to do. Teenagers with too much leisure time are more likely to start abusing drugs than their peers who have hobbies and/or part time jobs.

In the same way you can say that it is easier to start something than to stop something. If you want to quit smoking it is easier if you put something else in there instead. You go and actually do something else instead of lightning a cigarette every time you are tempted to smoke. Something incompatable with smoking. Like running.

If you want to lose weight you could just eat less. But that is hard, it would be easier if you could eat in a different way, then you are active, doing something about it. And yes you can, you can eat a lot more vegetables. At least 600 grams a day to take an example.

It is more fun to be active than passive.

Great advice on being specific with your goals! What I've learned is that you can never hit a target that's not even there in the first place. Being specific also helps you to better track your goals if you've reached them already or not.
