Prevent Running Injury

Suffered a bad ankle or muscle pull from running? Running is probably one of the best ways to keep in shape. However, injuries from doing these exercises seem to be very common. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. So how do you prevent running injury? The answer to that is the acronym SOW.

Shoes

Having proper shoes are probably one of the key ingredients if you intend on preventing any running injuries. Make sure that your shoes are meant for running, and you have the correct type of shoes. For instance, if you have flat feet, make sure you get shoes which are designed specifically for you as running with improper shoes may aggravate your situation.

If you have been using the same shoes for years, make sure that the cushion of the shoes are still intact. One way of doing this is by running on the shoe, and taking note of whether you feel a bounce every time you run forward. If you feel that your shoes seem flat, as if you are running without shoes, you probably have cushions in your shoes that are worn out.

Another great tip to follow would also be changing your shoes once you have ran about 350-500 miles with it.

Over training

Most common running injuries usually stem from the tendency of people over training. It is indeed a good thing that you intend to get better, thus pushing yourself more. Going that extra mile. However, in order to prevent any injuries, you have to make sure that your body is ready for whatever you put it through.

If you are just starting out again, make sure you act your miles or increase your intensity in a progressive fashion. For instance, if you have not been running for a long time. Do not go into a 10km run straight away. Start from 3km, and progressively increase your distance. It might sound like a waste of time. However, by doing this, you will not only be able to prevent running injuries, but also be able to run better if you start out slowly.

Warming up

This is probably the most important step to take in order to prevent injury, which most people tend to ignore. You probably would have heard the same thing throughout your life, that warming up prevents injury. To do some stretches etc. But what is the correct warm up? How long should you run for?

The answer for that is doing a dynamic stretching routine. What this does is to gear you up for your sport, in this case running, so as to make sure you are able perform at the optimal levels. Compared to just the typical static stretching, dynamic stretching is far more superior as static stretching have shown to impair your performance.

So if you intend to prevent any running injuries, always check for SOW. Your shoes, not over training, as well as warming up. Just remember, if you SOW, you will be able to reap your rewards of injury prevention.
